Taxes, fees and other charges

The Federal Universal Services Fund, and the local Franchise Fee have not changed, yet the charges for each have increased significantly on my latest bill, from $1.48 to $2.92 and $2.79 to $3.32 respectively. Also, the State Communications Tax has not increased, but the charge has increased significantly on my latest bill, from $1.58 to $3.15.

What is the explanation for these large increases that are not supported by any changes to the underlying tax rates or fees?

Hello @user_crlv6a and thank you for posting on our Xfinity Community forums! 😀 That's a great question.

Taxes, fees, and other charges may change for a variety of reasons.  The government entity assessing the tax may have changed the amount due, or taxes may vary by your usage and rate plan.  (i.e. if your billing overall changes, it may also affect them.)

The way some of these charges are posted on your bill, and how they are affected by billing changes can vary from State to State depending on where you live as well.

You can view additional information regarding such items on your bill here: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/most-common-taxes-fees-surcharges-on-your-bill

Please let us know if you have additional questions.

I've already checked with the tax authorities, and none of the above mentioned taxes or fees have changed at the municipal, state, or federal level. It appears that Xfinity increased them significantly unilaterally, since there is no other logical explanation, and as you can see above these increases were significant. For example, he NH State Communications Tax charge on my bill has almost doubled, yet the NH State Communications Tax has not changed.

An excellent point @user_crlv6a!

Rate changes in the case of some fees can and do change quarterly, and the totals billed for fees can vary based on the total billing amount for services, as many of those rates are not a flat fee, but calculated as an overall percentage of your bill.  If your monthly charges for services increased, then some fees would also increase as well.

The fees are based on my telephone plan, which has not changed.

If the total rate you were paying for your bill included multiproduct discounts that have changed @user_crlv6a , then the amount charged for taxes and other fees would have been based on the amount paid 'post discount'.  While the base rate for services may not have changed, if you had a promotional roll off that affected the bottom line by reducing the actual overall payment amount, this could also affect certain taxes and fees.

We would be happy to review your billing with you if you would like to determine if this or other factors may have affected the amounts on your billing.
