Offered free Apple watch to reduce internet bill; told no additional charges ever - now paying extra and can't return!
Beginning my Mar-Apr bill for xfinity internet service, my charges jumped from 65$/mo to 114$/mo, due to loss of a 35$ promotional discount that expired (I had received that discount after calling customer service the previous time my bill came with a huge price increase). I am on a fixed income and could not afford the higher cost. So I called customer service to see if anything could be done because I would need to cancel if it could not be adjusted to a lower cost.
The agent said they could adjust the monthly cost to 74$/mo upon the condition that I accepted a free Apple watch as well as reduce my internet speed from 500mbps to 150mbps.
I said the lower speed is fine but I really don't want the Apple watch. I am over 80 and don't need additional gadgets. Further, I have macular degeneration and did not believe I would be able to get much use from the watch due to my deteriorating vision.
The agent said the lower cost was contingent upon accepting the free watch. I asked, "what is the catch?", to which he replied there was none. I asked, will there be any additional charges associated with this watch? He said no. I asked "ever?" He said, "no, it is completely free". I asked again, "are you sure there won't be extra charges for accepting the watch?" He said only if I did not activate it. If I did not activate it, then I would have to pay for the watch itself. I said I did not think I could activate the watch - due to my poor vision and lack of understanding of complicated gadgets. He said not to worry, they would activate it for me.
When I received the watch, I immediately got a call from customer service (I did not call them) to activate the watch. I again asked about fees associated with the watch and was told there were no additional costs if I activated it. I did not feel I had a choice since I was told by the internet customer service agent that activating the watch was required to get my internet bill down to where I needed it to be. So I agreed for the agent to activate it. I have never even turned the watch on.
After about a month and a half, I noticed my mobile bill had increased by about 10$ (from 40$ to 50$). Frankly, I did not think too much about the jump because I have become so used to xfinity raising their charges that I thought it was simply that, and the 50$ was still manageable for me - not to mention the difference between paying 74$/mo for internet instead of the 114$/mo I was paying before agreeing to accept the watch.
My daughter was recently visiting and I told her about the free watch and asked her if she wanted it because I would not be able to use it. She said she didn't think that would work because she was not on xfinity and asked what I had to pay for the watch. She asked to look at my billing history and saw the extra 10$ charge for watch service. She did some investigating and saw that many people had fallen for the same offer. She saw I could return it and so that's what I decided to do.
Since it is so time consuming to reach the appropriate person on the customer service line, we decided to go to the xfinity store to see about returning the watch. Unfortunately at the store we were told that because too much time had passed, they would not be able to take the watch back, but they thought if we called customer service and fully explained the situation, then they should be able to accept the watch return.
I made multiple calls to customer service but they refused to allow me to return the watch because the 14 day window had passed. I again told them I had never even turned the watch on. They said that did not matter. They suggested if I did not want the watch, I could pay the full cost of it (250$) and then sell it. My daughter looked at the resale for unused versions of the watch I had and the offers were between 50$ and 75$.
I'm very upset about this on so many levels.
- I did not want the watch to begin with and told the agent so.
- I was told that was the only way to get the lower internet rate was to accept and activate the watch.
- I was repeatedly assured that no cost was associated with accepting the watch and there would be no additional monthly charges.
- When the agent called to activate my watch, they said nothing about additional charges, even when I asked about them.
- Although I understand policies like a return window, I did not see an increase in my bill until well after the 14 day return window and customer service has been unwilling to set this right so far!
- I cannot use the watch due to my age and poor vision, both of which I mentioned to the agent who offered the watch.
- I cannot return it and the resale value only covers a fraction of what xfinity would charge me for it if I sold it.
- I am now locked into a 24 month contract with xfinity for my mobile service even though, prior to accepting the watch, I had paid off my phone so had no contract.
- I now have lower internet speed than before - although I am satisfied with the cost.
I really hope that xfinity will make this right and allow me to return the watch. I would not think that a big company would engage in deceptive practices like this as a policy; probably the agent who offered the watch intentionally mislead me out of his own self interest.
Please help resolve this situation. I have been a loyal and long-time customer and this is just so very disappointing. Thank you.
