Charge for non-returned equipment

I inquired about returning 2 boxes approximately 3 years ago and Comcast told me not to bother returning as the equipmenr was outdated. I have thrown one of them away years ago. Please advise to why now the charge?

It was a Comcast store located in Marion, VA where I originally got the equipment. Unfortunately it is no longer there.

We do recommend returning all rental equipment regardless of age. This helps us protect the environment. With owned equipment that is no longer functional, we also recommend checking with local electronics retailers or local municipality for electronics recycling to help reduce e-waste. In most cases, there would be a charge for unreturned equipment, but we will be more than happy to look into the account to see if any further information can be gathered.
