Well, I thought I was long out of the woods on this issue. :-( Watching the "Voice" - On Demand, and dropping audio most noticabley between show segments and commercials. Without fail, I was getting break up during and then transitioning back to the show. Once back in the show, things seemed fine. That was "On Demand". Later was watching a DVR'd Science Channel (HD) show and was getting audio/video out of synch.. no break up, just slightly out of synch. Later a DVR'd SyFy channel movie and everything was perfect. Why it's all over the map is beyond me, but clearly if one DVR'd program was in synch they all should be. Has anyone considered any of this being related to the channel lineup swaps that were done?? My entire setup hasn't changed in months and this just started last night. Live TV through OLED speakers seemed fine, as did Live TV via optical to receiver (Denon). I have an Arris X1 box. Will check again today and tonight, but has this really come back again???? :-( Jay S.

Can't believe we're still talking about the Pace vs. Arris sound issues with X1??? :-( First, make sure you have an ARRIS / Motorola X1 box. Pace boxes were constantly causing sound issues. Also, not sure (trying to visualize) your connections. Try Live broadcast and also try HDMI directly to Samsung without any connection to Bose. In your setup, are you going HDMI out of Bose to Samsung? I'd also check Smart Apps on Samsung for audio output.

My installation story (and "possible" issues) are a little different. Original set up before Comcast Home was ARRIS 722 Cable Modem. Airport Extreme Gen 5 (supplying both a 2.4 and 5 ghz networks) connected to the Arris 722. A second Airport Extreme (Gen 2) connected to extend the original Network setup by AE Gen 5. In this case, all devices, wired and wireless were see direct IPV4 and IPV6 traffic. The Arris 722 automatically sent both sets of information to the AE Gen 5 for auto setup. Comcast Home apparently requires its own "dedicated" wireless service I was told. The tech brought out an ARRIS TG862G (which I can log into and see). So as not to conflict with the 10.x.x.x default settings in the two AEs and existing network, the TG862 was reconfigured with a 192.168.1.1 gateway address. The AE Gen 5 is now plugged into Port 1 (the only active one I was told) of the 862.. All the XFinity Home wireless (the control panel touch screen primarily) seems happy. All the downstream devices from the AEs are running fine with one exception. The two AEs are no longer seeing the IPV6 information. The tech called level 3 Comcast and was told that the two downstream AEs were now really just handling the home network IP addresses and that the TG862 would handle both IPV6 and IPV4 information (which when I log into it with a wireless device it does). So the question is, am I losing anything in the two AEs in terms of original functionality? Bridge mode on the TG862 is not acceptable as the Home Security Touch Screen needs access to the TG862... Thoughts?? Jay S.

Cloud DVR is not additional storage (yet). It is additional access to your DVR content from other devices inside and outside of the home. Not available in all areas yet. Ted, Thanks for the clarification.. Read the other note about connection via e-sata, not USB, which makes sense (unless it was USB 3.0 on a new(er) version of an X1 box..) .. For e-sata to be reasonably quick, it would need a SATA III connection (6 GB vs. 3 for SATA II) ansd use a 6G drive. I don't know what SATA connection the current Arris box is. That said, the fact the Cloud DVR will extend the existing 500GB to a lot more devices, only makes the issue of 500GB that much more of a problem. That goes back to being able to have local external storage connected and have the ablity to either access it from Cloud DVR, or be able to move items back and forth to the 500GB storage in the box to be accessed from the Cloud.. Either way, we're still in need of the connection being activated. Thanks again for the update. Jay S.

Never seen it help anything. :-) Turning e-sata (or USB (subnote.. is X1 box USB 2 or 3?)) I don't believe is hard.. I think, as you're saying it is more a matter of flipping a switch.. In reality, the harder part is Comcast marrying the X1 code's DVR function to look for an interact with an external box.. I'll grant them that. That said, we're supposedly on the "premium" experience and offering and other than the comments that it is on the roadmap we don't have much of anything to go on.. My take from those comments is Cloud first, HDD (or SSD) later... and who knows which X1 box that will be by that time. Rustyben... Agree e-sata is faster, but rapidly becomming a dinosaur as far as connections go (right, wrong, or otherwise).. Clearly USB 3.0 is close, USB is much more universal, and quite frankly the connection is more solid.. I'm not a fan of the fact the e-sata just kind of slides in with a very thin connector. No one is really in business to give away anything. :-) There's another thought that crossed my mind as far as "why" Comcast may be approaching cloud first. I'm going to make an assumption that the older boxes, while perhaps getting external storage, will not be able to play in a Cloud solution, and that Cloud will be an X1 exclusive. I could be wrong, but I don't think they're going to go back to the old boxes to provide them an advanced cloud feature, so, to address the lack of storage, by necessity, external storage would have to be used. I think Comcast will try to position, marketing wise, as the next great reason to migrate to X1.. access your programs anywhere, anytime (outside the home). To pull that off, the assumption is that a large percentage of the population wants or is projected to want that ablity.. We see it being offered on phones for standard programming, only DVR is missing.. It's a much easier connection from Comcast to provide you access from a central Cloud vs. somehow accessing a HDD on your X1 box, routing that back up and out and guarantee no break ups.. given the nature of external storage. that could be a tall order.. That's why I think it will be Cloud first, external second for X1, with perhaps an ability (far down the road) to migrate programs between them. That to me would be something worthwhile.. (listening Comcast).. Having the ability to have a local library at home, and have the ability to load up the Cloud with programming I want to see I may have kept, etc.. Even better, be able to populate local storage with items of my choosing and be able to play them elsewhere.. images, personal video, etc.. Jay S.

The X1 Arris box is a Motorola manufactured box to my understanding. How different is the firmware (not the X1 code) to turn this port on. If they can figure out how to do it on older technology, why is there not an equal push for the latest technology? No one is blaming you for strategy decisions, but it is such a glaring hole in the thought process that it boggles the mind.. Appreciate all help in escalating and accelerating the plan.. Jay S.

There is no difference in price per month for the two - Arris and Pace. Robert... I was refering to the fact that it is a DVR vs. a companion box as far as price.. Additional hard drive storage space had almost nothing to do with my decision to pursue replacing my Companion boxes with DVRs although I cannot deny the benefits. I replaced my Companion boxes with Arris DVRs because the Companion boxes are fraught with so many other problems. I happen to believe the X1 Companion boxes were not originally designed to be used as terminals to a hub box. I think they were designed to be free standing X1 HD boxes that got pushed ito service as AnyRoom terminals. The point I am trying to make here is HD storage space aside, multiple Arris DVRs is currently the best way to enjoy the X1 platform. This is X1 at it's current best. I'm still here... We haven't heard from Comcast Teds in a while though, that's for sure. I haven't seen many, in any, updates to the old thread either. :-( As for form factor, don't know but judging from the size of the box, I'm guessing it's a 2.5" drive, not a 3.5.. Seagate hasn't been as rock solid as they used to be. I'm almost entirely Western Digital for my Mac Pro (three RAID boxes plus 4 internal SATA drives). If a drive goes, which is rare, their RMA process is incredibly fast and no questions asked. Jay S. Hey, Jay S, I should have KNOWN you were an IBM'er!! (I have no idea what I mean by that...) I was doing Technical Marketing Support for a large software vendor when IBM took over. At first, of course, everyone was afraid of what IBM would do. In the end, however, IBM did a great job with letting Lotus continue to function much as it had. Over time, it was clear that IBM's added resources were a real boon to Notes users. Your point about an AI interface is well taken. That would undoubtedly be better than the simpler Notes lookup. However, I can only write about what I know! And it seems that if Comcast isn't willing to spring for a decent AI interface, a simple repository of data would be way better than the "nothing" they have right now! Appropriately-applied authentication would prevent dumbasses from posting stuff that wasn't true (or at least, their posts would be eminently traceable, so that the author can be spanked.) Editable fields would allow even end-users to add words to a Keywords field. On the other hand, doesn't Steve Ballmer or one of those other Microsoft originals have a big stake in Comcast? I think you're mixing two of the conversations going on here. I am looking for SATA activation on the X1 box for local storage. That is where the cloud conversation comes in, and if cloud is going to make you jump ship, be forewarned, that ship has already sailed. X1 IS going to have cloud storage (on top of what's in the box - mine is 500G . I want a solution that allows external storage to be connected, and IF I want cloud storage, that should be a separate discussion.. Comcast should allow us the ability to have both external storage on X1 and Cloud and make things interchangeable. There are some advantages to cloud storage.. watch DVR material anywhere on multiple devices, backed up media so if you X1 box dies you don't lose everything, etc. As of now, the only additional storage for X1 that is available is cloud. According to Ted, turning on external local storage is on the drawing board.. The odd thing is it's being turned on for the older boxes, but not X1. That's one thread. The other is GB's issue of being told that X1 will not support multiple HD DVRs in the same household (3 I think is what he's looking for). His issue is the inconsistent answers from Comcast regarding that. He got one answer here from Ted, another answer from Comcast support, and yet a contradictory answer from another forum member. GB... Just for the record, I'm a 34 year career IBM'er, retired in 2010... I'm well aware of Notes. :-) Was there for (and a part of the negotiations) the Lotus acquisition. I actually think Comcast needs a more AI driven database structure... one that can build on a query and reply with best case or most likely relevanty answers.. Something akin to what IBM did with Watson for Jeopardy :-) But to your point, there is a lot of confusion and contradiction within all departments at Comcast.. sales, technical support, etc.. but I will cut them some slack... some ... (I know this is not the X1 forum, but a lot of X1 content seems to creep in...) Jay, thank you for summarizing it so well. I have been in and around computers since since the late 70s (dinosaur), and the term "cloud" has been around forever. It's really nothing new. In the current (2014) context, it just mean "leave your stuff at somebody else's house (and hope that he's home when you want your stuff, he doesn't move away, or his house doesn't burn down, etc.)". Although our Comcast internet service is pretty good, it DOES have glitches and slowdowns (which would be JUST at the exciting part of my favorite movie, right?) A four terabyte external disk can be had from Costco for just over $100! Why would anyone choose cloud service? Having said all that: at the moment, I would give in and use cloud service - if it were available! (I live in California, in a small town near Stockton.) We got rid of our last two SDTVs a few months ago, and now we have three nice new HDTVs to use. However, we wind up watching (and recording) everything in SD because there is so little storage space! Teds: I do want to thank you for all your efforts to answer everyone's questions, and even sending refreshes to people's DVRs where needed. I'm sure that if you were in charge, the ext. disk fatures for X1 would already be activated!! Especially if Comcast is unable to offer cloud service to a particular area, they should at least activate the Ext. HD features. In fact, all X1 users should always have this option; if your cloud service is really good and competitive, people will use it because they want to (not becuase Comcast forces them to!) These problems are enough to make ME consider moving to another recording platform (e.g. TiVo, Hauppage, etc.), which doesn't restrict my storage. I'm sure you can see how this is really not a good situation for Comcast. A couple questions for you: (1) Is there a particular forum or post that I should follow in order to get the latest information on the X1 issues? (i.e. something not in the "Motorola/SciAtlanta" area? :-) (2) If it's a matter of "nagging" someone to convince them they need to activate the ext HD stuff for X1, who would you suggest we need to contact? (I know, that's probably something you could get in trouble for answering!!) With our X1 platform, our intent is to be able to use the cloud for DVR recordings in more and more areas this year. In many areas, the X1 Experience already has a cloud DVR opportunity where individual DVR recordings are not stored on the in-home device. This cloud DVR experience would really negate the need for a limited and physically in-the-home external hard drive and all boxes could be AnyRoom DVRs. Plus the opportunity to retain your DVR recordings should you move or you need to replace the DVR. And the opportunity to access and playback your recordings from any internet-enabled device. The packaging strategy for additional storage space for X1 devices has not yet been announced. Enabling the e-SATA port on the X1 platform for external hard drives is on the X1 product roadmap. There have not been timelines announced publicly for that specific feature. I have shared your feedback above directly with our X1 Product Management team. We've acknowledged that there are inherent capabiiities in a cloud based DVR "extension" over the local storage on the box. We've acknowledged access remotely, as a "backup" of sorts, etc. What we've (and the older DCxxx family of folks) are discussing in the abilty to increase the localized storage using SATA devices which are, in fact, a significantly less expensive proposition vs. some monthly charge for added cloud storage. Frankly, we don't "roam" that often that accessing our DVR from a remote location is a #1 priority. I was told recently by an 800# rep who handles X1, that the plan is for 500GB free added on to the existing 500GB I have on my Arris box. IF true and the 500GB would be free, I think that would be both an incentive (for non X1 users) and a reward (or sorts) for the added expense many X1 users are already paying. IF on the other hand the 500GB (if that's the number) comes with some monthly charge for Comcast to cover the cost of the storage, the internetworking between devices, etc., etc. then we're back to the original discussion, which is a simple on.. One that you have repeatedly "clouded" (pardon the pun) with the cloud story about X1 and DVR.. Best case scenario.. Allow X1 users the ability to use localized external storage.. including the ability to move entries between onobard X1 storage and externally connected storage (this would serve as a local backup).. Secondly, allow users the choice moving items from either local device to a Comast managed Cloud DVR.. In fact, if Comcast want to REALLY allow users the most flexibility, we should be able to access either the internal or external storage from anywhere on the network. Again Ted, please confine the reply to an externally connected storage device on an X1 box unless, as I mentioned I was told, that Comcast will be "giving" us 500GB of storage in the cloud. I think the response time to remote control commands is faster, but still delayed. I never had audio dropout issues on the satellite boxes so I don't know if there is really any other difference between the Samsung satellite and the Pace satellite. The technician did tell me that Comcast was working on supplying some sort of IR dongle for the satellite boxes that will purportedly make them respond faster, but did not know the timing on that.

Ted, I think I covered this before. I understand the movement toward Cloud useage. I understand access to DVR'd programming across the net (assuming you have the bandwidth where you are), etc. However the cost comparison for straight up storage of say a 1TB drive and enclosure vs. monthly add on charges for something that is already inherenting expensive doesn't make for an appealing equation. Even more so because a premium is usually paid for X1 users as we watch the older technology box GET the very thing X1 users have to wait even further for (if it really is in the plan as you suggest). Isn't that somewhat backward? The X1 box is far newer technology, very programmable, etc. I would think if you can get it working on the much older Motorola boxes that turning a feature which seems, in fact, to already be built in, would be relatively easy. The flag is already there.. one can see it in diagnostics.. Joey.. All I can report is what happened here with Connecticut Comcast. I had no audio drop outs with the Blue Power Light Pace box. Perhaps it is regional implementation, but would suspect not. As for DirectTV, that's certainly a choice, but hate the dropouts due to rain and snow (again I guess location dependent). Will try to net this down... I had a Blue Power light Pace which did solve the audio Drop Out Issue (like Rick, we never had a Pandora issue, but) our first box was a Blue Power light Pace, without question, there is/was one available. You currently have no need of Surround Sound, but you only have component inputs on your TV, so your choices are limited. One, find a Blue Power light Pace box (perhaps it fixes Pandora?).. It is a newer and more capable Pace box. Second (and I'm being serious here).. is to abandon X1 for now, go back to a Motorola DCT model box which had no sound issues, and get Pandora through something like an Apple TV, ChromeCast, etc.. Lastly, you're unfortnately somewhat caught between technologies.. A component only TV is clearly much older technology, and sooner rather than later, the lack of any real basic digital inputs is going to catch up in terms of Blu-Ray players, gaming machines, etc. being attached. If you do decide to upgrade TVs, then there are a world of swtichboxes, receivers, etc. that can take component as an input and output to HDMI. Just as a repeat. The blue power light Pace seemed to solve the audio drop/synch issue. If you're running component to your TV and are not using any digital output for surround sound, then if you can get your hands on the newer Pace, your sound issues should be taken care of until you upgrade your whole system to HDMI and Surround Sound. With component your audio signal does not support surround sound. There are only three ways for Dolby Digital Surround to be transimtted to a receiver.. I think you said earlier that you had a green power on light? If so, it is a Pace box, but not all the Pace boxes have a green power light. There is a newer Pace with a Blue Power light. It solves the audio drop out issue, but does not handle surround sound to your receiver completely correct. (if you have a surround sound system). You can also check the model number. If it is Green, it's an Pace box, but Arris does not support Component so you have to have a Pace box. Since you're just using stereo speakers and nothing surround oriented, you need to get a newer Pace (it also has a blue ring) which also does support Component. The Pace box you have is the oldest of the bunch. There are Pace boxes with newer technology which corrected the drop out issue, but had some surround sound issues. Sounds like you might have had an Arris box originally (no component). There have been a lot of posts in this thread, so you'll have to forgive me for not remembering your specifics. I'm assuming in your last sentance, you mean it reverts to stereo after selecting surround? Before I was able to get the Arris, I had a blue ring Pace and did not have the drop out issues, nor did it revert to any other setting after selecting surround. My setup may have been a little different than yours, but don't know. My recevier does not have HDMI input, so all my HDMI devices are routed back to the HDTV through a Sherwood Newcastle HDMI/Component switcher with TOSLINK optical out. The only issue I had with the Blue Ring Pace was that after turning the menu on X1 Surround to ON, the receiver was getting a "all on" no matter what signal was actually being broadcast. This resulted in 5.1 on those channels broadcasting it and stereo on all the others, but I also had a low but audible "white noise" type hiss on the surround speakers. As we all know the Arris has none of these issues. I don't know if my hookup with the Pace elimintated some of the issues or not.. Robert.. So I'm assuming you've turned Surround on in the Pace box. What does your Onkyo show when watching a non DD5.1 show? If you have one of the newer (blue light) Pace boxes, those seem to fix the drop out issues, but send the receiver an "always on" signal for all channels regardles of the actual TV programming's real audio signal. If it is working correctly, your receiver should show all channels when 5.1 show is playing, but a PCM stereo signal for normal programming. Dave, If true (meaning no Arris), then get a blue ring Pace. At least that way you won't have drop outs, and will have some semblance of surround sound, even if it's the always on mode. In that config, if a show was DD 5.1, the receiver did handle it correctly. P.S. Ralph.. I get Pandora as PCM signal on my receiver and audio is fine. In my case though, my Sherwood Newcastle doesn't have HDMI inputs, but the Sherwood Newcastle HDMI/Component swticher I have (HSB-600 Love it) provides optical audio out from the HDMI signal coming in from the X1 box. I'm getting DD 5.1 on TV programming and can take the PCM signal to something like NEO 6 if I want to play around with the straight stereo signal.. Dave, In my case, only the main box needed to be swapped. The other satellite box was fine as is. Just meet the nice gentleman at the door and tell him if it isn't an Arris, please look on the truck for one, and if not, tell him you were specific in your request for one with the 800# folks. Dave (and all), The 800# folks, and even the installation folks aren't AV experts.. They only know their job, which is installation, signal strength, cable runs, etc.. Neither is versed in the nuances of Surround Sound the way an audiofile may be, so I have a hard time finding fault with that level. I escalated my case all the way up to X1 development through Comcast.. and had no problems getting connected to that group. They were very courteous about the whole thing, and actually understood things a lot more. That said, even they don't have immediate access to every receiver on the market or HDTV or HDMI switcher, etc.. One thing though is clear. There is an issue with the Pace boxes, green or blue. The blue is better, but still not right. The only solution is to make sure that whomever is coming to the house brings an Arris box.. There should be no other discussion because it's wasted breath at the 800# level.. and even (to some extent) the installer level. I'm sure Comcast did not set out to have these audio issues with the Pace boxes (meaning the design of the box SHOULD have worked to specs).. the reality is Pace made Lord knows how many of them and Comcast distributed them... So for many of those households, the Pace box is fine.. they're connected with audio only from the TV and happy. For the rest of us, the answer is to just stick to you story and tell them only an Arris box will do what you need. As the commercials say "Accept no substitutions". If they want to keep doing truck rolls because they bring out a Pace box, that's up to them.. Just let them know you're going to keep scheduling a tech call until they do (bring an Arris). From what I was told, all the newer ones are Arris that drivers are bringing out.. I was told by an install tech, that they had received a nationwide notice about audio issues and Pace boxes with X1. Call and ask for Customer Retention Department. Their job, as the name implies, is to keep customers in the fold. Before doing that though, I would again schedule a truck roll with the express purpose of them bringing out an Arris box because of all the audio issues with the Pace based ones. Ask that the installation person call before arriving to make sure he or she has one. If they get to the door and don't, refuse the service call, but make sure you've gotten all this on the problem ticket when you call. How does one escalate, the reps I have talked to are clueless. I never can understand how people are placed in service position and have no knowledge of their hardware. You should have seen the installers, they couldn't tone out my modem run (because their batteries were low), and they kept wanting to access the basement and attic to physically find the Coax and follow it. They couldn't comprehend they were replacing FIOS so it had to be ONE of the existing 5 that were hooked up when they got here, not one of the disconnected runs that aren't being used.

Second that.. Agreed.. Audio drop outs were not an issue with the Blue Power light Pace I had, not was Surround Sound, per se.. The issue with the Surround Sound was that it was always on as a 5 channel output, regardless of the actual signal to the receiver from the programming.. @RickGr4 wrote: Hmmm that is interesting. Dave.. Have to agree with Rick.. Escalate and tell them you need the Arris box because your surround sound won't work with a Pace box.. This is documented. I was told by the tech when they swapped my Pace for an Arris, that there was an internal nationwide ticket (don't know how true that statement is) about Pace boxes, audio issues, etc.. From what I understand, Comcast can disable for your line if you're looking for a permanent fix. I believe the "outbound" code is for people using a phone dialer (or modem) for some work purpose. We have our message set to say "either away from the phone or on a call".. @SuperDave426 wrote: What aspect of call waiting? SuperDave... Can't speak to your issues.. Don't know your router (for wifi), speed boost, phones and their processors, etc.. We have no issues with any device (including phones) connecting to wifi or issues with the Facebook app. If you're seeing issues on Facebook even on a larger machine, there are ways to trace that route to see if there is a link somewhere in the chain causing a problem (you don't mention other apps or connecting)... While Android may be not so easy to connect to, maybe he meant Android on whatever brand phone you have? I've been in direct phone support with HTC several times to resolve some issues... and just for comparisons, I'm on an older Rezound. Back to Facebook.. have you done a traceroute or ping test to see if there are any bottlenecks between you and the site where you're having issues.. It's just helpful if you have that when calling. Not sure what aspect of call waiting you want to turn off, but you can definitely turn off notifications on the TV from the X1 menus. @SuperDave426 wrote: Every service has their pros and cons and different people like different things. I have requested it and it just can't be done. They claim it can, but it is still on after a few attempts. And there are about 5 other features that aren't even offered. So after having DTV, Dish, FIOS and XFinity I can find things we really like with one over the other, none of them are complete. Just a shame there is no way the Sat Companies can compete with a Triple Play, I was paying more for TV than I was for all 3 services when we switched.

Not sure I want to get into the satellite vs. cable, but I would think, connection for connection, people on a cable system are less likely to experience dropouts, slow down, etc.. than those on satellite. Have been there as well and wouldn't be tied to satellite unless I absolutely had to. The peripheral systems almost have to be better to compensate.. And I'll defend at least my experience with being best. My network never goes down.. I may experience hiccups, but when I do, I get respect and honest attempts to fix from each level of support. I'm sure the Hopper is nice... Watching last year's Master's golf on a neighbor's satellite was neat with all the different windows...for a while.. eventually I found myself saying.. I really just want to watch the tournament.. not play around with all the other stuff and wind up missing something. :-) You can't get the speed you get with Comcast anywhere else and to me speed is king. So, maybe they don't have all the bells and whistles, yet.. maybe some of the bells and whistles don't work right, e.g. this rollout of X1 and the huge difference between boxes.. That stuff can't happen. You have to get the right equipment, and get it right the first time... not have customers do the beta testing for you in real world terms. Comcast is still the best and biggest, which is why they can get away with some of this. On the flip side, if I have a complaint and treat them rationally, we usually find a way to work it out..
