register a cable modem that is second hand?

Hi everyone,

I have my own netgear personal cable modem registered on my Xfinity account. 

I want to gift this one to a friend to use with his Xfinity account and buy a new one for my home.

Do I need to de-register my current cable modem to do this for him? If not what does he need to do?
