XFI "Upgrade for This Experience" with personal gateway

I am using a personal CM1150 gateway. I activated XFI and saw

"Your Xfinity services are ready when you are."

 

When I go to

https://internet.xfinity.com/

I see "Upgrade for This Experience

To access xFi, you'll need to upgrade your service/equipment"

 

I read past forum threads and couldnt find one which answered this. Is it because I am using a personal modem and is there a way around this"

It won't work with a retail purchased device. You'd have to rent one of their compatible devices.
