Why is the upload so slow?

I get 480mbits down, often more, which is great, but the upload is 18mbits, which is really, really painfully slow. A faster upload would result in faster posts to web sites and make the more responsive, and would also allow me to upload media content to youtube and facebook much more efficiently, I have to handbrake my videos into low quality to get a decent upload time to facebook or youtube, and it's painful then.

Is there any option for me to get a faster upload speed, and why did Comcast choose to make uploading so painfully slow?

This is the normal situation. Ever since broadband started, consumer service has been "asymetrical" which means that the download speed is much faster than the upload speed. This works really well since almost everything we do on the internet requires a much more downing than uploading.  For example, I just tested my 1gig service and got 920 down and 43 up.
