What is this thing?

I used to have the internet/phone/tv package and have just recently switched to internet only. Today I was removing all the splitters in my line so I can run the main cable directly my modem. This cylinder thing with the blue sticker on it is outside the house, between the main cable coming off the powerlines and the cable running to my modem. What is it and do I need it anymore? Thanks

Can't see your pic. Since you are a new poster, it needs to be approved by a Forum Admin. That could take some time. In the interim you could try hosting it at one of those free third-party pic hosting sites like Imgur or Photobucket and post the link to it here.

Re: What is this thing?

That’s a high pass filter, I’ve only seen them with a grey label. Take a look at your modem levels and see if your missing any upstream channels. It would’ve either been put there by the maintenance team at some point or by a tech that didn’t want to fix any noise/ingress/interference. Post all your levels if you can

Re: What is this thing?

Yeah, i've been missing 3/4 of my upstream channels forever. Channels 2-4 say ranging status: retries exceeded and my modems just logs the retry errors all day. all channels here: https://imgur.com/PtvJpY0 so should I try taking it off then?

Re: What is this thing?

I hate to tell you to take it off but it’s there for a reason ( just not sure why). You aren’t missing upstream channels, you posted 4

Re: What is this thing?

The ranging status errors are ok? I don't know what they mean, just assuming it's not supposed to say that.

Re: What is this thing?

Well, I just took it off today and now those ranging errors are gone from my modem. Everything seems fine so I'm gonna leave it off.

Re: What is this thing?

You probably have noise/interference and don’t realize it. When those are put on it’s meant for you to call in and get it fixed. Don’t be shocked if you see another one of those put on or are completely disconnected depending on how bad the ingress. The filters are meant to keep ingress from your house out of the plant so others don’t have issues, cause outages etc.
