I seek help for our Xfinity service at our small business.
Many times we will bring our laptops from home and not be able to access various essential websites. Including our own business website.
When we spoke to Xfinity, they said it was because we bring our laptop in from home and the changing of wifi networks messes things up. They reset the wifi on their end, then it works for the day, and when we come in the next day, it does not work again.
This seems to be an accurate theory as we have a computer in the office that does not leave the premises, and that one always works correctly.
They did not give us a solution, only pointed out process behind the problem.
Do you guys have any possible solutions?
We are using Xfinity DTC3939 wifi router.
The manual for that one doesn't document features other than wifi, so it's not much help, but you could do a test.
On the LAN/Internet settings in the admin screen, change out the DNS servers instead of using comcast. Use Cloudflare 126.96.36.199, 188.8.131.52 (does not track), or Google 184.108.40.206, 220.127.116.11(does track). Verify when your laptops connect, that the DHCP server on your gateway passes these out for DNS. Windows "cmd" shell --> ipconfig /all
Xfinity "enhanced security" net nanny issue? Dunno. Does sound like a DNS problem, although I don't know why switching from a home to work network would be a problem unless you set funky static DNS manually. Routing all your traffic through another 3rd party net nanny like "Avast Web Shields" may be the problem too, but there again, switching networks with the default DHCP settings shouldn't be a problem.
FWIW, the DNS servers can not be changed in the Comcast supplied gateway devices. Also, they can't even be changed in the individual clients as their gateway devices no longer act as DNS relays / DNS forwarders.
Thank you for the responses. Is this something that can be fixed if I get a new router? Is something that can be fixed if I have a tech come out to our business location? I don't even know how I could schedule something like that... I just know I would like it fixed! I have an extra AC1600 router I could try... I think I may have a different model Xfinity router.
I think we have found the problem....
After looking it looks like we had an older Arris modem/airport plugged into the newer router/wifi unit. We just plugged in the newer comcast modem into the wall and I think it appears to be working (although we have not taken home the computer since resetting network yesterday). I think that may have been the problem. We were just linking two modems together for no reason....
