Ping rate jumps over 100 ms

I have 1 Gig internet with the xFi modem. My son, when playing Roclet League, will get random and prolonged ping spikes of over 100 ms, which is unacceptable for a gamer, especially since I'm paying for your highest internet package. How to diagnose and fix?
