Frequent brief internet pauses, just started

Internet plan: 1000/35

Modem: MB8600

 

I've been using the above setup for a few months now, and things have been fine. Over the past few days, I've started having an issue where connections will just freeze for a few seconds on a rather frequent basis. This is evident, e.g., in ssh connections to remote servers (type, nothing appears, until all of a sudden it does) as well as running remote applications over a VPN (the application freezes for a bit every once in a while). It's gotten to the point where it's quite disruptive to work.

 

Tonight I connected my laptop directly to the modem and verified that the issue still occurs. So it's not my router. I both power cycled and factory reset the modem, and the issue persists. Looking at my signal levels, I do see that the upstream power is a bit high (~53 dBmV). I also see a few T3-timeouts in the logs. But, again, I haven't made any changes to my setup for a few months and this issue has only arisen in the past few days.

 

Any hints as to how I can go about getting this resolved? Is this likely an issue in the house, or is it on their end? If I have to call Comcast, what's the quickest way to get them to send someone out to look at our cabling?

It's not just "a bit" high. It's out of spec !

That can cause random disconnects, spontaneous re-booting of the modem, speed, packet loss, latency problems, and the un-bonding of channels.

In a self troubleshooting effort to try to obtain better connectivity / more wiggle room, check to see if there are there any excess/unneeded coax cable splitters in the line leading to the modem that can be eliminated/re-configured. Any splitters that remain should be high quality and cable rated for 5-1002 MHz, bi-directional, and no gold colored garbage types like GE, RadioShack, RCA, Philips, Leviton, Magnavox, and Rocketfish from big box stores like Home Depot, Lowes, Target, Wal-Mart etc. Splitters should be swapped with known to be good / new ones to test<br><br>If there aren't any unneeded splitters that can be eliminated and if your coax wiring setup can't be reconfigured so that there is a single two way splitter connected directly off of the drop from the street/pole with one port feeding the modem and the other port feeding the rest of the house/equipment with additional splits as needed, and you've checked all the wiring and fittings for integrity and tightness and refresh them by taking them apart then check for and clean off any corrosion / oxidation on the center wire and put them back together again, then perhaps it's best to book a tech visit to investigate and correct.
