Comcast says I can't get gigabit Internet using my Netgear CM1150V modem

I tried to upgrade my Internet service today, but was told by Comcast that my modem (Netgear CM1150V) is not supported by the gigabit package.  I bought the modem last year specifically because it was supported by Comcast with higher speeds.  Has anyone else been told the same thing? This makes no sense to me.
