Arris Gateway won't create event logs

For the sake of parental control and monitoring I'm getting to know my Arris Surfboard real well.  (ARRIS SVG2482AC)  I want to be able to monitor traffic and just look at activity in general.  All I read on the internet says that I should be able to look at log files created by the gateway.  However, if I go to Troubleshooting and choose a type of log, there is never anything there.  It spins and acts like something is happening and then nothing.  I have actually never ever seen a log.

What am I missing?  I don't want to do a reset unless I have to.....

And can this device actually show me traffic?  Meaning web traffic? Like history in a browser?

Thanks!

That’s not what event logs do, History of browsing is only accessible on the devices

Re: Arris Gateway won't create event logs

Ok... Its strange to me that the gateway thru which all traffic flows can't log what is flowing through it.  But forget about history of browsing.  Why don't I have any logs at all.   The buttons for printing and downloading are always greyed out.  Certainly there must be something going on daily.

Where can I find out what event, system and firewall logs are supposed to be showing me?

Thanks

Re: Arris Gateway won't create event logs

I need to clarify things as I'm learning.....

When I log into the gateway there is a tab for troubleshooting the gateway and thats where event, system and firewall logs should be.

There is also another section under parental control called "reports" but that is also not generating any reports either.  Both sections are dead.

However, the more I read, the more I have to respectfully disagree with the statement that history of browsing can only occur on a device.  EVERYTHING I read states that the router tracks all site visited by users.  Linksys, for example, has a much easier interface where you can click on devices and see exactly what was visited.  So I'm confused why this Arris isn't giving me logs, reports, anything at all.

Thanks

Are those various logging functions even enabled ? Many are not enabled by default and need to be manually enabled in the settings

Re: Arris Gateway won't create event logs

Interesting.  How might I "enable event logging in the settings"?  I have been completely through my modem's (Gateway's?) web interface and cannot find any setting that might explain why my event logs are suspiciously empty.  In fact, my modem reports: "System Uptime:0 days 7h: 39m: 43s".  It is now 8:58 am.  So sometime between 1 and 2 AM today, my modem ("Gateway?" "System?") apparently stopped working.  I can find no record of that event in the logs.  In fact, the logs for the XB6-T gateway are completely blank for the last week.

A ping loop shows that my house was without connectivity from 12:57:54 AM to 1:23:11 AM this morning.

Where are the events in the log?  If logging is not enabled, how do I enable logging on an XB6-T gateway?

Re: Arris Gateway won't create event logs

The Event Logs only monitor activity between the gateway and the Comcast CMTS. If you're looking for that level of activity monitoring (ie LAN activity) you're going to need a third party router with much more robust capability.

Plus, if you're going that route, you might as well buy your own modem as well and save the $15/mo lease fee.

Re: Arris Gateway won't create event logs

I found this post because I was searching the Internet on this topic.

I had purchased a referbed Arris cable modem and had seen lots of log entries.  But today, a couple weeks after install, I'm having Internet issues - and a blank log screen.

This is my modem - I don't think Comcast has the right to hide these log entries.  It was useful in the past to uncover signal noise issues.
