Another speed question

Just increased plan from 600 mbps to One Gig service.

Have Arris Surfboard SB 8200 modem and a Luxul XWR 3150 dual band router.  Desktop wired into router w/ approx 5' of Cat 5 cable.

Speed test consistently shows 500 mbps +/- download.  Seems being wired into router I should not get the loss expected with Wi-Fi.

Resterted modem already.

Is that cat5 or cat 5e ethernet cable that you are using ? If it's the former, you need to use the latter.

I would look into getting a Cat 6 my friend you would bennefit from that. These days cat 6 is not expensive either. Give that a try. Also you coulc  right click your network click open network and internet settings >> change adapter Options in this window  you should see your network adaptor  right click this sellect properties  in networking tab of this new window you will see configure click that. scroll through there and you will see advanced >> this tabe you will see speed & deplex make sure you set that to 1.0 gb full duplex.

5e is sufficient for gig, but I would personally overkill it with cat6 !

Thanks for the feedback--will try them and check results.

Should I expect 1 gig on a hard wired desktop?

Well I don't get a full gb but   I honestly think 936 mbps is better than my old 500.. So don't be surprised if you see  that range.

No. Never. There are always some protocol / ethernet overhead losses involved. Around 940 is typical.

Same here, went from 300Mb plan to 1Gb plan, same Arris SB8200 modem, but only getting 400Mbps. This is one pc wired directly to the modem. Changing to Cat 6 not going to solve this issue. Cat 5e is rated to 1Gb, Cat 6 is overkill (rated at 10Gb). I've already posted my (excellent) modem signal levels here in the forum but no one is helping, so I'll be getting Comcast out to the house soon to figure out what's wrong... you should do the same.

Thank YOu--I didn't think 500+/- was good enough for a hard wired Desktop with 1 gig service.

it isn't all about  modem if your  netowrk card is set to auto  it may not be allowing your internet the full speed. Auto also makes your net all over the placew. I have always set my speed & duplex to what ever speed I am promised. It seems like a silly thing but it does help. I feel like there is  a few factors  to look at besides just wiring modems and cables. I usae a cat 6 it  doesn't harm anything even if it's overkill.  I got mine from walmart . Not sure of your local stores but where I live they tend to sell cat 6s and Not a variety of cat 5s if that makes sense. I feel like buying online isn't alway the solution. I found that sometimes I can buy same item 5 dollars cheaper locally. With everything going on these days I feel like marketers are taking advantage of people trying to stay safe.

First you need to eliminate the router as the problem. Have you checked your speed with the computer directly connected to the SB8200, without the router involved?

That is a different problem--trying to connect directly to the modem I get "no network access"  "doesn't have a valid IP address" type messages

While the device is connected directly to the modem, you will need to unplug the modem POWER cord, count to 10 and plug back in, wait for modem to come back up, eventually your device will get a valid IP/connection. Then you can run speed test. After your done, plug back into your router and reset the modem (again) so it syncs back up to your router.

A very interesting subject. I am a new Xfinity customer, that being because until this past February, we had no cable/IP service on the road I live on. Now that I have it, fiber to the main node & copper to my home. We're under a quarter mile from the node. I'm using the XB6 gateway for internet and phone service only. No TV. Running about 6 feet of Cat 5e from the gateway to my Linksys EA9500/AC5400 1GB router, which is also connected to my desktop computer . I signed up for 1GB. The best I've ever seen is about 950GB direct connection to my desktop, no WiFi involved. Just my desktop and it was 947 DN & 43 UP.

Going wireless (WiFi) that all changes. It can range from the 400's to the 600's, (and with 700.0  just one time only being the highest ever recorded on my cell phone with 5GHz WiFi). I attribute the variance in speeds to several things: high usage of bandwidth due to the pandemic (so many people being at home using the net and streaming), physical location when I took (Ookla) SpeedTests, what server I used when I ran those speed tests and last but not least, any issues or problems Xfinity may have had at the times the tests were taken. But in general, I think the 400 to 600 MBps speeds are still reasonably accurate.  I hope this data point might be of some interest or value. My location is in the eastern panhandle of WV, about 75 miles from Washington, DC.

Thanks--took  couple restarts to connect desktop directly to the modem but it connected.  Here is the speed test with "supposed" 1 gig service.  I think a call to Xfinity is in my future.

Interesting--the screen shot shows in my draft message but not when I post it.

Was a little over 500 mbps down.
