Use Old phone number on new phone

I want my kid to use my old phone (currently xfinity) and port her number over from a different provider. 

The fastest thing I can think of is just buy a phone for her and port the number to xfinity. But I want to use the new phone. Can I just transfer the sim or how does it work?
