Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

Kudos on comcast being Comcast becoming a provider giving us the ability to utilize the watch espn app to stream.  Works fine on ipod and ipod touch.  While the claim is that it works on android smartphones, it does not.

I called espn, who at first was incredulous, and then said yes, app from the android play store is not designed to work now, but is designed to work soon.

When is soon and when will either the ads be updated to say it does not work on smartphones, or when will the app stream on android phones.

Thanks

Re: WatchESPN App

Really no android app update for the next few months?  More androids are being sold than iphones and yet no support, amazing but not surprising.  Central Pa still does not have the ability to remotely access our cable boxes for programming dvr ect..and that was suppose to be serveral months,  a year later you still can not do it.

Re: WatchESPN App

you need to remember when you program for iphone you are programming for one device and one only.  When you program for android you are programming for serveral hundred different pieces of equipment made by numerous manufacturers running different versions of the IOS, not as easy as you would think.

Re: WatchESPN App

I understand there are multiple Android devices as opposed to one device for Apple, but Comcast reached a deal with Disney, what, 5 or 6 months ago? Seems like plenty of time to work this out for Android devices. You'd think a company with the resources Comcast has would be able to get that done with such a large chunk of time to work with. How much programming can really be involved anyway, the app already exists and works, as long as you have the right cable company. Shouldn't it pretty much be just a matter of flipping a switch and allowing access? I'm not a tech guru so maybe I have it completely wrong, it just seems like they've been dragging their feet for an absurdly long time, even if there is programming involved. A multi-billion dollar company shouldn't take over half a year to program one Android app.

Dont forget they also do not have a xfinity tv app for android that does streaming either, so they are behind on everything that is android.

As stated by ComcastTed above, we expect to extend access to the WatchESPN app on Android devices in the coming months.

Once we get more information about a more specific timetable or launch date, we will let you know.

Where did you see that it was going to support Android? Please send us any links so we can change it.

you say that it works on smartphones; without specification that IMPLIES it works with Android phones as well.

However, at the very bottom of your email, in small print, I saw coming soon to the Google Play store for Android.

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

It doesn't make any sense for this WatchESPN app to not be available for use with Android devices for Comcast customers. This isn't even an app from Comcast so how can we be waiting for this app to "compatible" with a provider? Did Comcast have to arrange a deal with Apple and Google in addition to ESPN?

On a related post, I did see an ESPN commercial promoting the app saying you could stream from both ipod and android.  This is obviously premature..

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

An app exist for Android but Comcast is just not listed as an available provider. I do not understand what is preventing ESPN from just changing the Android app to have Comcast listed and getting authentication worked out with Comcast. They've already done this with IOS so it's not their first run at this.

I'm also sick of excuses (not just Comcast) about their being so many types of android devices- there are still only a few versions of the Android OS and many apps are saying your need v2.3 or later anyway.

No more excuses

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

You can probably watch espn on your android device in the browser by navigating to xfinitytv.com and logging in with your comcast account. iOS users probably needed an app because the xfinity espn streams are provided through Adobe Flash which Apple does not allow on its devices. Android does support Flash therefore you can view the xfinity content without needing an app.  I have ESPN streaming on my Samsung Tab using the Opera browser.  It would be more convenient if there was an app but for now this works.

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

The only reason for no Android support (despite ads in TV and radio saying there is) that I can think of is the continued incompotence of Comcast continues. No Comcast Sportsnet in central Indiana even though it was promised years ago and now a failure to come through with another advertised product. Guess we shouldn't expect any better from Obama's pet company than lies and broken promises.

one of the "miscommunications" is here:

http://espn.go.com/watchespn/getaccess?

it refers to the Google Play App to download the Watch ESPN app which gives the illusion that the app will work when downloaded to your Android device -- and I just spent an hour finding out it does not.

My xfinity player plays reruns of previously played shows but does not stream for current programming; watch espn does this.  Does your xfinity player stream any programming.

Are you referring to the WatchESPN app on your iPhone or iPad or are you referring to live ESPN streaming on www.xfinity.com/tv?

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

yeah. this whole "we'll bring it to android in the coming MONTHS" is complete BS.

hey - listen: it already works for iOS. All you needed to do was to add "Comcast" as the approved provider option to the ESPN app and feed the customer info / log in info to ESPN.

the exactly same is needed for the Android app.

They already made the change for the iOS app, so it's hard to believe why a similar change for Android should take "a few months".

I work in the ecommerce/IT industry and work a lot with developers and programmers. this should be a 4 week project at most. Especially since they are no reinventing the wheel...

However, we all know Apple and maybe Comcast gave iOS exclusivity for a few months just to make Apple and ESPN or whoever happy.

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

Thanks comcast joe:

You are correct.  For an Android phone (in my case Samsung Galaxy), when I go to the URL the WatchESPN , www.xfinity.com/tv?   after scrolling to watch live TV, I get boxes for ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3.

Because of Flash, I can stream any of those.

Because I have sprint, it comes with Sprint TV; Sprint TV has a limited selection of live programming but one of the 24/7 channels is ESPN; this is slightly better than the xfinity URL above.  However, the android CANNOT stream with watchespn at this time.

However, the IOS or ipod touch for a comcast user can get and stream with the watchespn app CURRENTLY.

Hope this clarifies.

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

I share the frustration of downloading the WatchESPN app on my Android, only to be told that to use it I must be a subscriber of Bright House, Time Warner, or Verizon.   ComcastJoe asked "where are you seeing that?"   Joe:  I got a message "pushed" to my cable TV box (in Jacksonville, FL), accessible from the cable tv menu "messages" option on Thursday, June 7, that said (quoting verbatim, emphasis mine): "Enjoy your favorite ESPN networks live on your computer, tablet, or smart phone.  Download the WatchESPN app or visit xfinity.com/tv.  Best of all, it's now included with your XFINITY TV service."   Again, note, this wasn't eager me going out there to download it to see if it worked.  I got a message from Comcast, pushed to my TV, telling me that I could download an app on my "smart phone,"  not iPhone.

Please let us know when it will be available for Android.   A correction to the erroneous advertising would be nice as well.

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

PS - forgot to mention that I called Comcast support here in Jacksonville asking about this four different times - three times I got disconnected while being transferred to the "app department."   The one time I got through I was told to go to http://www.comcast.net/sports/ and that I could do what I needed to from there.   I can watch TV on the PC - but there is no link to the smartphone app.   Ugh!   I would encourage you not to advertise something you can't deliver!

I got an email from Xfinity telling me to enjoy ESPN on my computer and on my smartphone, so yea, I wasn't out there looking for it either, it was a case of Comcast knocking on my door and telling me about this great new service I have.  yea, right. They need to define smartphone as iPhone and not Android.

Android Watch ESPN app

I think it is kind a funny that Comcast send out messages to your email and set top box stating you can now watch ESPN on your phone and your tablet. When download the Android app "Watch ESPN" it shows almost every provider out there with the exception of Comcast. So when is this going to be fixed?

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

WHY does it have to be streamed through Comcast?  WHY can't you just simply have Comcast/Xfinity as one of the listed providers like all the other ones are?

It's NOT like we are sent by the WatchESPN app to the Xfinity website to get a player ya know

When I first used the app, I "Lied" to the app by choosing NO PROVIDER at all (It has this option).  This gives you a free preview for a limited period of time.  AT NO POINT was I directed to ANY website (Not even ESPN's own website).  I was simply given a list of what was on each ESPN channel at the time & a choice as to which one I wanted to watch.  From there, the BUILT-IN app player was brought up & (After a brief buffering time) I was watching ESPN (I forget just which channel I picked at the time now though)

In any case, HOW HARD IS IT for you guys at Comcast to understand/comphrehend that YOU CANNOT CONTROL OR DICTATE THE DISTRIBUTION OF CONTENT BROADCAST OR STREAMED BY CHANNELS NOT OWNED BY COMCAST BECAUSE YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO DO SO ???

JMO.....

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

ComcastJoe

We are referring to BOTH the WatchESPN app (Which you only have the link for iPhone/iPad & NOT the Android version (Which I'll be glad to provide)) **AND** the Xfinity.com/TV website you mentioned because THEY ARE ONE & THE SAME

Translation - THEY ARE NOT DIFFERENT

That said - Here's the link to the Android version (Since SOMEONE obviously forgot to do their job correctly when WatchESPN support was rolled out) - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.WatchESPN&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsIm...

You will find that IT DOES stream video.  All we need is for Comcast/Xfinity to be added to the list of providers.  HOW HARD IS SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS THAT TO DO ???  Surely it can't be THAT hard to do or take THAT long to get done (But alas, we live in a world of CORPORATE KNUCKLEHEADS who have a propensity to take what should be THE SIMPLEST of tasks & TURN THEM INTO MAJOR GIGANTIC ORDEALS #Grr )

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

epurman -

If you have an Android with Flash, you shouldn't have a problem with streaming video AT ALL !!!  If your device DOES NOT support Flash, you can circumvent that by downloading the Skyfire web browser (It's the default browser on my T-Mobile Samsung Exhibit II) & the Skyfire Video License Key from GP

While the browser itself is free, the video license is not (But it's not expensive either).  Here's where you can download each.....

SKYFIRE BROWSER - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.skyfire.browser&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsM...

SKYFIRE VIDEO LICENSE KEY - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.skyfire.browser.license.video&feature=more_from_de...

The video license key is used by the browser to display video via landscape mode & does quite well (Sometimes it's EVEN BETTER than using Flash itself)

Hope this helps.....

Cheers

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

Thanks to PC_Bigboy for the link to the Android app.   I noted that today it said this (emphasis mine):

Access to WatchESPN live video is determined by your TV provider and, in some instances, your Internet service provider. The providers below are currently offering access to live video:
• Bright House Networks, Time Warner Cable & Verizon FiOS TV – ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPNU are available to fans who receive ESPN as part of their TV package
• Comcast – Coming soon to Google play
• Verizon High Speed Internet – If you do NOT receive TV service from an above provider, but receive high-speed internet from Verizon, you will have access to ESPN3

Please check back regularly as new TV providers are added.

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

I have both android devices as well as an Ipad (work related) and the app is in both market systems, the issue is that on the Ipad device when you launch the app it will ask your provider (Comcast) than take you to the feeds. On the android side Comcast is not a choice as a provider.

The app already exist in the android market all we need it for Comcast to be listed as a provider on the android app. I assume the would entail working with espn as well but considering you (Comcast) are already a provider on the I-pad side it should not be that diificult unless there is a royalty issue.

My question is has Comcast contacted Espn at all around this? Again the android app exist and other providers are listed and Comcast is listed as a provider on the Ipad app so why not on the android device?

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

Comcast seems to not like Android users  or they have a deal with Apple. They had streaming on the Iphone for over a year before they put out the android  app to provide limited streaming.

Even though the WatchEspn app is out for the Android  , Comcast is not a listed provider. and very likely not will be by the time the olympics  are on. Dispite the fact they sent out emails and advertisment in their billing statement saying olympic coverage any screen.

Any updates on when "coming months" might be? That was the line about two months ago, so it seems like we are well into "coming months" now. I can't believe the streaming protocols need to be different for android and ios, so how many months could it possibly take to just get comcast authentication wedged into the android app?

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

I have the android WatchESPN app loaded on my Kindle Fire, and it works via my comcast connection if I choose one of the listed carriers and watch without signing in. It will only work for a few hours (free preview) then it will shutdown. So, there is no technical reason why it won't work with Comcast. So what IS the reason? I note in the app that there are 5 ESPN network streams, while if I login to my comcast account on my PC to watch tv, I see only 3 ESPN choices. Could this be the hold up???

Anyway, until Comcast and ESPN get their collective heads out of their nether regions,

>>>my workaround is to delete and reinstall the app whenever I want to watch on my Kindle Fire, that way getting more free hours.<<<

Update: the delete and reinstall trick does not work. :-(

But you can still try this ONCE and get the free preview for a few hours.

So, just have to wait for Comcast/ESPN to get their act together!

Re: Watch espn app for android and comcast one of the providers

Anyone considered the idea that adding all their Android customers to WatchESPN availability may increase the fees Comcast pays ESPN (Disney)?

That sounds logical to me, and it would go very far in explaining why Comcast is in no rush to add this feature.  It just sucks that it's the Android users getting the shaft rather than iPhone (why are they better?).

Any mod able to provide an update to this? As we are almost 3 months past the rollout when it was said we would see availability "in coming months".  Very frustrating, but certainly not the first time I've seen things like this from Comcast.

Getting ESPN3 access only took about 2.5 years...
