Periodically Xfinity sends me a code when I have not accessed my account to change anything. Does this mean that someone is trying to login to my account?

Yes, if you have provided your Xfinity ID credentials to anyone else they may be attempting to do the following:
Sign in to your account. An SMS code may triggered if someone was able to sign in, but you have enabled Two Step Verification on your Xfinity ID, which prevents them from signing in unless they are you, which is the best way to prevent unauthorized sign-ins.
Reset your password. Someone may have attemped to reset your password using your mobile phone number, which triggers to code.
Either way, do not provide the code to anyone you do not know/trust - this applies to any service where you've enabled Two-Step Verification or Multi-Factor Authentication
