Voicemail question

Calls seem to be going straight to voicemail on my landline phone. How do I increase the number of rings before voicemail picks up? Can I disable voicemail altogether? (I have an answering machine).  I am unable to do this online as my email is not linked to this account; is there a way to do it on the phone? Thank you.
