smtp server blocked?
I am trying to send email to my office e-mail server
mail.egr.msu.edu
port 587 using STARTTLS
Outlook is unable to connect unless I have a VPN connection active, upon which it immediately goes through.
Also tried Thunderbird on the same computer with the same result.

My IT department had to use a different port and now it works. It was not leeting me use port 587 unless I was on VPN. But switching to 465 solved the issue.

@carl131 To make sure i fully understand, When accessing via your Comcast Home Network, your connection is being denied when sending to mail.egr.msu.edu, but when you change your IP/Location from Comcast to something else, you are successful. This would indicate that mail.egr.msu.edu has blocked your Home Network IP from communicating with their server. You will want to reach out to mail.egr.msu.edu and advise them of your situation and provide your IP so they can remove you from any black/block list that is filtering you out from being able to connect to their server.

@carl131 Yes, a VPN will generally modify your IP address when you enable it.
You can check your IP by typing "whats my IP" into google.
