I can't seem to pick a different internet-only plan from the Comcast website when I am logged in as a current customer, and when I try to change to "uncapped", it asks me to buy a comcast gateway, which I do not want or need.
It seems like Comcast only allows you to add plans that are more expensive through their website.
They do not allow you to downgrade or save any money.
Seems quite shady.

There are two different options for this feature and service and one of them requires you to have a leased modem. You need to select the option for customer owned modem.
