YouTube-only buffering / every device effected
Please open a ticket with network engineering or whoever is most appropriate to check the health of the Google Global Cache node and the Google peering path serving South Florida, specifically for traffic from my area.
I can provide account details by DM and run any diagnostics you'd like, including traceroutes to specific YouTube hosts or testing with a computer connected directly to the modem.
Meat and Potatoes,
Since roughly May/June, YouTube playback stalls for 5 to 15 seconds at a time, several times a day, on every device in the house: iPhone, iPad, iOS YouTube app, Safari, and desktop Chrome. It doesn’t matter if I’m on a wired or wireless connection. Nothing else is affected. Netflix, browsing, iCloud, and gaming all work normally.
Packet loss: ping to Google over 225 seconds showed 0% loss at every hop, including all Comcast hops
Latency: flat at 15 to 21 ms over a week of monitoring
In-home network: all links at gigabit, no CRC errors, 0% WiFi packet loss
I don’t use ad blockers, no extensions, no DNS filtering. It happens the same way on wired and wireless devices.
I tried and connected to a VPN connected and YouTube plays instantly with no buffering. I tested this back to back on the same video and as of now, this is how I get around the buffering.
So It buffered on my iPad and on my
iPhone without the VPN, then played instantly on the same iPhone with the VPN on.
Since the VPN only changes the route and which Google cache serves me, this points to the path between my connection and the Google Global Cache node or peering serving my area.
My traceroute leaves Comcast at:
be-2411-pe11.nota.fl.ibone.comcast.net (68.86.85.62)
I am located in Delray Beach, FL 33483 if that is nessesary.
