Xfinity hotspot not going away despite disabling on app

Since last week I noticed my home network service pretty bad; intermittent WiFi service to all devices connected (disconnection, very slow speed sometimes) and in general staying below 500mbps on devices and areas of the house where I got >900mbps (plan is 1gbps).

In parallel I noticed two xfinitywifi and XFINITY networks prompting on the available list. And NOT going away when I disconnected the gateway which made me believe they were broadcasted by my equipment. I insistently disabled the xfinity hotspot join in but both hotspots are consistently showing.

naturally, no progress has been made with tech support - neither regarding performance of my wife service nor regarding the removal of these hotspot networks despite my multiple attempts.

can someone please support ?

Other folks have reported the hotspot function turning itself back on.  Perhaps more frequent after a power cycle.   There's also a hidden signal (it doesn't broadcast an ssid) for their security systems that you have no control over.

The only way to truly get rid of it is with 3rd party equipment.  Then the "feature" doesn't exist.

That being said, if your neighbors are in range and have Xfinity equipment, you might still see the XFINITY/xfinitywifi hotspot signals from them.  To find out if it's you or not, try a free WiFi scanner like Acrylic Home WiFi.  Watch the display, then pull the power cord on your gateway and see if they vanish, or if they are still there, just at a lower power (neighbors broadcast).

For the slowness part, do you get consistent performance if you connect with Ethernet?  Always good to try to separate connection problems from WiFi problems for a test.

You can also use the WiFi scanner for a site-survey of your house.  Draw a floor plan,  walk around with a laptop and map out signal strength to find weak spots.  You might be able to make it quite a bit better by just moving the gateway a bit.  Then walk around with the laptop again to see if you changed anything.

@flatlander3 thanks for the response. I believe both things are correlated because:

1) hotspot networks disappear when I de energize the gateway and

2) gateway has been on the very same position of the last 3 years. New one and old one (I had xfinity providing a replacing unit as I though it was hardware issues).

3) I’m discarding physical cable issues as the gateway speed test is showing > 900mbps on the app and on Ethernet.

spectrum issues may be another potential root cause but, it will be easier to discard the hotspot on gateway correlation. I always keep a list of networks available on a daily basis on a special log I have on my pc (traditions of an old computer engineer :) ) and exactly when I started noticing the new hotspot from xfinity,  the performance  problems began, and viceversa.

The other problem with the rental gear?  No control of the radios, and quite honestly, even a cheap mesh network system (base unit and a couple of remote points) or a couple of cheap hardwired access points  if you can string some Ethernet work a lot better, with more control than crippled firmware.

Break even on cost for a modem and WiFi gear happens eventually.  Toss in a firewall while you're at it.  Make one with a junk PC with pfSense or OpnSense.  Then you control your entire network, better security and can manage bandwidth and data used by device.

Your stuff might be shifting from WiFi 5 to WiFi 6.  The rental gear is supposed to "adjust the wifi".  Does it?  Dunno.  I question their QA abilities and outsourced firmware in general.

Hi there, @Marcolino_12. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention. We can definitely look into the broadcasting of the Xfinity networks for you and your speed issues. Did you disable the hotspot through the Xfinity app?

I no longer work for Comcast.

I am having this same issue to no avail. The chat is a joke.

@user_df6407

Please create a new topic of your own here on this board detailing your issue. Thanks. The original poster has not returned. Dead thread is now being closed.

For future reference, it is better to submit your own post as it creates a ticket to get help, and posting on an old thread can delay getting help.
