xFinity Gateway

I need to know (1) how to check if all my devices are covered by xFinity Gateway, and (2) whether xFinity Gateway is the sufficient replacement for Norton Antivirus.  Please advise.  Thank you.

If you are asking about xFi Advanced Security (https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/online-security-with-xfi-faqs) --

All devices connected to a Comcast xFi rental gateway would be protected, whether the connection is by Wifi or Ethernet. But although they would have us believe that xFi Advanced Security is just as good, if not better, than actual anti-virus software, and although it is only available to customers who rent one of their xFi modem/router/eMTA gateway devices, it's pretty much a "black box" and lacks many features available with security software like Norton or McAfee. Further, it cannot detect malware that arrives over a secure (encrypted "https") connection. Separate AV software is still a good idea.

No, a net nanny which is really what "xfinity advanced security" is, won't protect devices from all exploits.  I totally agree with @BruceW on that.

That's horrid advice Xfinity.

It can block some known hostile actors, but that's about it.  You'll hit some cross-site scripting that it won't be able to block.  Does nothing for stuff you intentionally download or email.  Does nothing for a browser exploit that you either allow, or one you can't see that you allowed (especially new zero day ones that come out).

You really need something that can handle that on the device itself.  That's especially true with windows, but you'll notice everything else does have security patches too that come out, phones included.
