Xfinity gateway "website block" does not work - has anyone found a solution?

There are many community forum questions about the "website blocking" procedure below for the last 6 years but I don't see a solution.  I am trying to block a single website (https://www.chess.com) as a test but it does not work - see image below for the URL and keyword.   Does this functionality even work in 2026?

Set up website blocking

To set up website blocking from the Xfinity WiFi Gateway's Admin Tool website, you may have to enable Admin Tool access. Visit Allow Xfinity WiFi Gateway Admin Tool online access using the Xfinity app.

  1. Go to http://10.0.0.1 from your home network.
  2. The default settings to open the Admin Tool are:
              Username: admin
Password: Check the sticker on the bottom of your Xfinity Gateway for the password.
If you changed your Admin Tool password before, use your new login info. If you don't remember your Admin Tool password, you can contact Xfinity or factory reset your wireless gateway.
  3. Go to Parental Control > Managed Services. The Managed Services menu allows you to prevent access to applications and services.
  4. Select Enable, then:
    • Blocked Sites: Click Add and enter the URLs of the websites to be blocked, and set up a time schedule.
    • Blocked Keywords: Click Add and enter keyword(s) that appear on websites you want blocked, and set up a time schedule.

Found this response from a few months ago. My interpretation is Xfinity is saying their Gateway site blocking really doesn't work at all.   I hope this is not the case.  If you look at the way it is wored "the built-in admin tool used to offer basic website blocking features..." - well, this is not correct - my brand new Gateway built-in admin tool DOES offer this functionality (not "used to").

Great question—and you're definitely not alone in this one! Blocking specific websites can be a little tricky depending on the setup, and I totally get how frustrating it is when it feels like you're doing everything right but it still doesn’t work.

With the XB8 Gateway, the built-in admin tool used to offer basic website blocking features, but they can sometimes be hit-or-miss—especially with websites that use multiple domains or HTTPS encryption (which most do these days). That’s likely why entering the site manually isn’t giving you the results you expected.

Right now, the best way to manage content and block specific sites is through xFi Parental Controls in the Xfinity app. While it doesn’t let you block specific URLs directly, you can pause devices, schedule offline times, and apply content filters for things like adult content, which helps a lot with general safety and control.

If you're looking for more precision—like blocking certain websites by name—you might consider adding a third-party tool like OpenDNS or using a router with more advanced parental controls alongside your XB8. Totally understand that’s not ideal, but it gives you much more control over individual websites.

We know these tools aren’t perfect yet, and we appreciate your patience—it’s something we’re always looking to improve. If you want help walking through the options or setting up one of those alternatives, we’ve got your back!
