XB8

I recently upgraded to the XB8 gateway and have been experiencing issue with certain devices (particularly my Apple devices) losing the Wi-Fi connection. To resolve the issue, I have to forget the network and reconnect using my password. I've worked with support and they don't seem to understand the issue. I also have two xFi pods. I've been seeing some posts regarding the same issue and wonder if it has to do with my Apple devices connecting to the Wi-Fi6E band which uses WPA3-personal. The 2.4 and 5 bands all use WPA2-PSK (AES). Any suggestions.

On your Apple devices, go into settings and turn of "Random MAC Address".  It is something that Apple would have you believe increases the security of your devices, but in fact it is a major headache.  After making the change, power off your apple devices, reboot the modem/router, and power your apple devices back on.

@NoNoBadPuppy I'm not sure where to find the setting to turn off random MAC address.

@randy1264 You can use the search function in settings, or simply google it.  Once you have made the change, reboot the gateway, and reboot your Apple devices.

You absolutely must have all the bands set to WPA3-Personal-Transition from with the WiFi settings in the Xfinity app. An Apple device capable of WiFi 6E will not work properly without it.

Within the Xfinity app, I only see where I can update WiFi to WPA3-Personal-Transition. I don't see where I can update the individual bands. When I access the admin portal for the gateway, everything is grayed out because the settings are being managed automatically.

That’s a good thing. It means that all three bands (2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz) are all using a single WiFi name (SSID) and password. Open up the Xfinity app, tap WiFi at the bottom of the screen, then tap the WiFi details tile, followed by Edit WiFi settings. This is where you’d find where to adjust the Security mode. Just ensure that it is set to WPA3-Personal-Transition. This will set it for all three bands, simultaneously. Don’t worry, older devices that can only use WPA2, as that is precisely why you set it to WPA3-Personal-Transition. This setting allows WPA3 capable devices to connect using WPA3-Personal, while WPA2 devices can still connect using WPA2.

After you’ve changed it to WPA3-Personal-Transition, power cycle the XB8 by disconnecting power for 30 seconds. Do the same for both of your xFi Pods.

While those are restarting, completely forget all instances of your home WiFi network from all of your Apple devices. Then power cycle your Apple devices.

Once your XB8 and the xFi Pods are fully online, then connect your Apple devices to your home WiFi network with a fresh connection.

This should resolve your connection issues with your Apple devices. Let me know how this works out.

Regarding the randomized MAC address, you go to Settings on your iPhone, followed by tapping WiFi. Here you will see your home network name (provided you’re currently connected to your home WiFi network). Tap the little “i” within a circle on the right side of the screen. Then you will look for where it says “Private WiFi Address” and set this to “Off” to ensure that your iPhone only uses this same MAC address every time it connects to your home WiFi network.

@user_323c89 I tried the first steps and still having the same issue. Oddly, the issue seems to only occur later in the day. I did look at turning off the "Private WiFi Address" but it puts a privacy warning message. Should that be a concern?

Apple is being dramatic.  They want you to believe that a feature that causes more problems than it fixes is going to save you from being hacked.  Leave it off.

@NoNoBadPuppy Thank you. I've turned it off and will continue to monitor.
