XB6 gateway: I can't log in to change admin password

I just activated a new-to-me XB6 gateway.  As I was activating it the gateway gave me the option to change the admin password.  Now I'm able to see the gateway login page at http://10.0.0.1 but it keeps telling me that my login is incorrect.

Things I've tried:
- using the username "admin" and a blank username
- using the default password "password" as well as the one I set during activation

- using different browsers on different devices.

- resetting the gateway. I've tried three times to do a reset including a full 30-30-30 factory reset and it doesn't work.  Weirdly I still see my custom WiFi network name.

Questions:
- should I be able to log in through http://10.0.0.1/ and change the default admin password, or are users locked out on the XB6?

- should I be able to reset the XB6 to factory default by pressing the button on the back?
- what do I need to do in order to change the default admin password for the gateway?

Are you holding the reset button in for at least 25-30 seconds after you press it ? If the device is truly being reset to factory defaults, you would no longer see your custom WiFi network name (SSID). And the login creds would default to being admin for the username and password for the password.

Yes, I held the reset button for 30 seconds three times including a 30-30-30 reset (held the reset button for 30 seconds, unplugged it for 30 seconds, then plugged it back in and held the reset button for 30 seconds again).

I did find this other message board comment that suggests that http://10.0.0.1 is disabled for the XB6 and above:

https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/your-home-network/cant-change-password-to-access-modem-and-router/65a5996920d30143e1b3584d?commentId=65e79f40aad9eb48a85c35eb&replyId=65ea49e1a675d54e94be6ad6

If that's true, it certainly would be nice to have a popup tell us that or at least have a webpage with that information that comes up when I search for "XB6".

FWIW, the factory reset button should work as expected no matter what other functions / settings that they've CRIPPLED in the firmware. Perhaps the button and / or device itself is malfunctioning. You could try getting it swapped out for another one and see.

Looks like their Xfinity app must be used now to adjust any other settings that they still allow to be changed. YMMV.... Good luck !
