Wireless 5G well below, wired and service speed

I have a 1gbps service speed, my wired connection gets ~800mbps, which seems fine, but my wireless connection (the 5G not 2.4) gets ~200mbps.

There are no other devices running and downloading data when I do the speed tests.

Any ideas?

What devices are you using to test?  Both clients and modem/router/gateway.  Please be as specific as possible.

What sort of place do you live in?  WiFi being slow when your wired speed is much faster is often caused by interference.  Apartments, condos and townhouses are particularly bad, especially if they have frame walls between units.

It's quite possible the WiFi router/gateway/mesh node/AP/etc. is just misconfigured or autoconfigured itself stupidly.  There are tons of complaints on this board and across the internet in general about brain-damaged WiFi auto-configuration.

WiFi 5, 6, and 6e support channel widths of 20, 40, 80 and 160MHz.  A lot of devices don't support 160Mhz channel width.  They also have more than one stream.  Max bandwidth is based on width x streams.  Most clients only have 2 streams.  Fancy routers have more.  I don't know how many streams Comcast gateways have, but even if they have more than two it's not likely to help unless you have one of those rare few clients with more than 2 streams.  A few laptop and desktop WiFi adapters have more than 2, like more recent and higher end Intel based MacBooks have 3-stream WiFi 5 radios.  I'm not aware of a phone with more than 2 streams.  Sometimes autoconfiguration does something really stupid, like picks a channel with a lot of interference or decides to use a 20MHz wide channel.  For example, if you're using WiFi 6 or 6e with a 20MHz wide 5GHz band (or 6GHz for 6e) channel with the usual 2 streams 200 is about what you would expect.  Max theoretical bandwidth in that configuration is 300Mbps, but you never get max theoretical on WiFi.  The rule of thumb is 2/3s is fine and 3/4s is pretty much max if you're close to the router/gateway/AP/etc.

Using Pixel 6Pro to test. MT7711 router MT7711 24X8 Cable Modem - Motorola @5G, not 2.4G setting. This is single home, when I test I am 15 inches from router. I followed configuration instructions below but they did not help https://web.archive.org/web/20230320100235/https://help.motorolanetwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/226794407-Wireless-Optimization-for-MG7540-MG7550-MG7700-and-MT7711.

Since most internet usage is wireless I just reduced my plan from xfinity to be 400mbps and not 1gbps. I still get 200mbps wireless, which is 50% of what I am paying, which is better than 20%.

@user_251tsp Hello! We just wanted to check back in with you and see if you still need assistance with your download speeds. We would recommend going here (https://speedtest.xfinity.com/) to run your test and if it still seems to be coming in a bit too low, please let us know.

My service is 400mbps, my wired speed is 400mbps, my wireless still at 200mbps. I checked with Motorola, no luck.

I still get 200mbps less than service speeds provided.

Thank you so much for sharing that information with us @user_251tsp. We are glad to hear that you are getting your subscribed speeds while hardwired. Speeds over WiFi are never guaranteed as there are a number of factors that can affect your speed when you are wireless such as how many devices are connected but we are happy to help troubleshoot your connection issues further to see if we can get your WiFi speeds up closer to 400Mbps. May I ask if you have tried any troubleshooting steps thus far such as resetting your modem?
