Will Xfinity attempt to log into my personal cable modem?

I purchased a MB8600 some years back since I wanted my own CM and to save some $. Lately I've gotten notices from the modem that logins are paused due to too many incorrect attempts. I changed the default when I installed the modem and only login in sporadically. I can only guess that perhaps Xfinity/Comcast does some polling on all modems and uses default passwords? Not sure how anyone else could get access to attempt to log into the modem. thanks for any insight.

Hello, @loafy28@flatlander3 is correct in that we cannot remotely log into your personal equipment. Their comment sounds like a great candidate to be marked as an "Accepted Answer"! Thank you for your first post on the Xfinity Forums. Congrats!

No, Xfinity can't login to the modem because there is no remote accessible login to the MB8600.  You can look at line stats from your local LAN, but there is no external internet facing "login".  It's just a modem.  They can send a reset signal, update the firmware globally on models, and look at statics on their end.

You have an Xfinity account.  There is a phone app.  There is Xfinity email.

How are you getting the notification, and what are you getting the notification on?  A push notification or 2-factor text messages on the phone, or an email?  Or a pop up when you try to check your email that tells you the email login failed due to too many failed authorizations?

@flatlander3 - thanks for the quick response and confirmation. Didn’t think there could be an easy way to access the device remotely but wanted to check. I do log into my modem a few times a week to check on the corrected and uncorrected error counts and then reset it if it seems high. It’s when I log in via a web browser that I sometimes get the message that logging is paused due to too many incorrect attempts.

strange but overall the internet service seems very reliable.

thanks

@loafy28  That's when you are trying to access the modem locally with a browser at http://192.168.100.1 right? (I think that's probably right for Motorola admin page....I don't have one).

If the above is true, One thing you can try, is clearing out your web browser's cookies and web site data if you haven't done that for a while.   It's in your web browser settings.

Another thing you can do is look at the saved logins you have stored in your web browser.  If you search your saved logins  for 192.168.100.1 (or whatever the status page is if that isn't correct), you may have stored a username/password for that IP address.  Perhaps your browser is trying an incorrect one a couple of times, and failing the attempt if you changed the modem's default.  You can just delete that specific login.

See if you still have the problem after that.

*Edit:  Still one other issue:  I got a netgear that complains bitterly if I don't log out after viewing a status page.  If I log in from somewhere else, it complains.  Maybe your motorola does too.  Try logging out after viewing stats.  See if it happens again if the above doesn't work.
