Will a 2.4 GHz only device connect to a non-split band network?

Hello,

I have my Xfinity network setup so that it is not separating the 2.4 GHz and the 5GHz channels (automatically managed). I have a Google Nest Thermostat that will only connect over the 2.4 channel. I have not been able to connect the Nest to my Xfinity network and was wondering if my 2.4 and 5 channels are not split if Xfinity is able to detect devices that can only connect over the 2.4 channel? Or if I will have to split the channels in order for the Nest to only use the 2.4 channel, since Xfinity is not able to manage devices that can only connect over the 2.4 channel automatically?

Hello and Happy Tuesday!
You've a great question!
So if the bands are not separated, then devices should be able to connect to whichever, they are capable of working with!
If your advanced WiFi settings are visible and your channel settings are set to Auto, your Xfinity Gateway will automatically detect and connect devices using the optimal channel to provide the best WiFi signal at any given time. This is based on a variety of things!
I've included a helpful link with some details and information regarding the split bands and how it can be done if needed and capable!

If it's a device that just speaks 802.11b (2.4G), it's not going to work unless you "split the channels" to allow 802.11b.  Older WiFi 5 radios could speak 802.11b/g/n, WiFi 6 will not.

Automatically Managing -- Xfinity term for crippled firmware, has to do with channel bandwidth and a channel selection feature that was cost reduced out, and not the radio standard the radio can actually speak.
