Wi-FI doesn't work on cell phones

I can connect and use the internet + wi-fi on all my devices (laptop and Xbox One), but it won't work on any cell phones. I've troubleshooted on my cell phone (iPhone 6) and my friend's phone (Google phone). The phones will connect to the wifi after I enter in the password for the wi-fi network, but apps or internet will not work. It says it is connected with full wi-fi bars, but nothing will load on the internet.

Some troubleshooting I've tried so far:

1. Forgetting network and trying password to connect again.

2. Restarting my network settings on my iPhone.

3. Restarting modem and phone.

It must be the wi-fi since it has not worked on my friend's phone as well. I've never had this issue. What would it be?

Try to add 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to your iphones Dns, on your iPhone, go to settings, under WiFi you should see your ssid name, click on the i with a circle around it on the right of it and go down to where it configure dns, click that and then click manual, instead of automatic, then where it says add server, click and add 8.8.8.8, then again 8.8.4.4 then click save,  it should work after that, if it don't, click on the i again, then forget this network, then in the list of networks to choose from pick yours, your will have to put in the password again. It should work after that.

@jlavaseur FWIW, if the poster is using a Comcast supplied gateway device, the DNS can not be changed. Not only not in the gateway itself but even in the individual network clients as the gateway devices no longer even act as DNS forwarders / relays..

My suggestion don't change Comcast's dns it adds another server, I just had the same problem, even on apple's website it says to do this if you have that problem

It is my understanding, and from seeing posts here in the past, that no other DNS servers can be forwarded through the Comcast gateway devices, so you can't change or even "add" anything in the individual network clients.

In bridge mode it acts as an ordinary cable modem (layer 2 bridge), so the DNS will be forwarded. When it's in router mode it will not.

@EG  I made a Linux router out of a old computer and when I put the Xb6 gateway in bridge mode, plugged into the Ethernet port to my router, I can set whatever dns I want to use, I also can set the dns I want my clients to use,  on my iPhone if I get connected and no internet, I add the google name servers like I posted above and it will start working, I am not sure how it works, but it does, also I put a vpn on my router and it takes over and uses its own name servers, that way anything running thru my router is connected thru the vpn,  maybe I am missing something, but my setup works great

Wouldn't that mean that you would not get a response from:

dig @8.8.8.8

from a mac or linux host behind a gateway?  I get an answer from that.
