Why is my modem no longer supported?

I have a Netger AC1200 c6220 modem/router which was supported by Xfinity when I bought it. I am unable to stream on my laptop today, and after doing some research, I discovered Xfinity no longer supports the c6220 (which explains my streaming issue). Please educate me with answers to the following  questions:
1.WHY and WHEN did Xfinity decide to stop supporting c6220?
2. Of the modem/router combos currently supported by Xfinity, which ones are most likely to continue to be supported by Xfinity for more than two years? '
I am especially interested in the answer to my second question because I don't want to be buying  a new modem/router every 2 years and no, I don't want to "rent" the Xfinity option. I'm not cheap, but I also don't care to waste money. I don't like buying a highly reviewed and regarded piece of equipment approved and supported by Xfinity only to have it rendered virtually useless for whatever reasons Xfinity used to render it virtually useless. The c6220 is good for speeds up to 340 Mbps (according to Netgear).
It was in this forum that I learned c6220 is no longer supported but I couldn't find answers to my questions, so thank you in advance to whoever is kind enough to help me.
Also, I selected internet as category here because my internet performance has been mediocre and at times nonexistent over the past year. The fact that my modem is no longer supported by Xfinity seems to explain this in addition to my inablility to  stream.

Hello @user_fsd4am, thank you for listing your concerns so clearly and getting us on the same page. Using your own modem is an awesome option that gives our customers options for how they set up their networks. I love that we do that 😊. Our engineers do take careful consideration of the devices that are compatible with our network. I don't have a way to provide you an answer to your qeustions. I would suggest reviewing our List for Compatible Devices. When it comes to 3rd party equipment I'm limited in the suggestions I can make. However, any of the devices that are currently compatible for your services will have been confirmed to be able to provide you the service we aim to produce. It may very well be that your modem isn't compatible as we upgrade our network and look to bring Next Gen speeds. Have you already purchased a new modem and had a chance to Activate it?

Thank you for your detailed response and suggestions. Yes, I have purchased a new modem and activated it. I'm not sure how happy I am with it - Arris Surfboard SBG8300. It seems functional, at least. But my concern remains: how long will this modem be compatible with Xfinity? When will Xfinity decide to make it incompatible and necessitate me having to replace it? I don't remember exactly how long my Netgear modem/router combo was compatible with Xfinity - I think it was 3 years at the most, quite likely more like 2 years.

Although I say the Arris is functional, I am not satisfied with the speed I am receiving. I pay for 1 Gig, and the top download speed thus far has been 483 Mbps. That speed was achieved when an Xfinity technician was here in my house fixing various issues. The typical speed I am receiving ranges from280-330 Mbps. The tech assured me that my modem/router is a good one, no issues there. And he explained to me that regardless of what speed a person pays for, the most realistic expectation is to receive about half that speed (in my case, subscribing to 1 gig means realistically anything close to 500 Mbps is excellent. Subscribing to 800 Mbps = realistic expectation of 400 Mbps, etc). He explained why but I don't remember what that explanation was. I do remember that his explanation was logical and made sense to me. And I realize there are other factors that reduce actual speed: number of devices connected to network, location of router/modem, possible sources of signal interference, quality of the devices connected to network, etc.

Taking all those factors into consideration, I am not satisfied with the speed I am receiving. I have only two devices connected to the network (computer and mobile phone) and many times just one device as the computer is off or I disconnect my mobile from Xfinity), my router/modem is in direct sight of my computer at a distance or 9 feet, my computer is capable of handling speeds up to 1.2 Gigs, etc. I am thinking about changing my Xfinity plan and reducing the speed to 800 or even lower, as it seems wasteful to pay for 1 Gig. With my typical speed range, I am paying for about 800 Mbps that I don't use or receive.

So this must have been a recent change this year or something. It was weird, I started getting in and out on my internet the last couple days and when I went to reset my C6220 modem. It suddenly won't connect at all to the internet. I've had this modem for over 4 years and no issues between a year in one apartment and over 3 in my current. Even when going through support they got it to connect for a second. Then now it won't work at all. Going to the link below seemed to show the issue. Kind of [Edited: "Language"] that it doesn't work anymore just like that. :(

Edit: So real talk, after 2 hours of trying to get my internet back and seconds before I get ready to order an upgraded Netgear modem. My internet light is back on. I have full internet now. But it still isn't supported by Xfinity anymore. So I might have time to shop around. Just be careful on not resetting your modem. You might be out of luck for a few hours! OR FOREVER!!!!

... Arris Surfboard SBG8300 ... I pay for 1 Gig ...

Note that Comcast does not rate the SBG8300 for Gigabit speeds. https://www.xfinity.com/support/devices/ lists it as approved for "Wired Download Speed Up to 941 Mbps".

... thinking about changing my Xfinity plan and reducing the speed to 800 ...

You should either do that, or replace the SBG8300 with a device rated for Gigabit speeds. See the Devices link above, and especially the "All Compatible Devices" link near the bottom of that page (at the moment it points to https://assets.xfinity.com/assets/dotcom/projects/cix-4997_compatible-devices/2024.04.03%20Full%20List%20of%20Compatible%20Devices.pdf, but this changes from time to time).

If you are interested in the new, higher upload speeds, also see https://www.reddit.com/r/Comcast_Xfinity/wiki/knowledgebase/next-generation-internet/ which lists the approved devices as well as other requirements for faster upload speeds.
