Why does Xfinity keep telling me I need to change my wifi name and password to fully activate some software update on my modem?

My internet is acting up and this is the 2nd time i called this month.   the representative keeps telling me in order for some software update to take effect on my modem,  i need to change my wifi name and password.  I don't want to do that because i would have to reconnect alot of devices connected to my home internet..   someone please explain this to me

Click "Sign In" if necessary

  • Click the "Peer to peer chat" icon
  • Click the "New message" (pencil and paper) icon
  • Type "Xfinity Support" in the "To:" line and select "Xfinity Support" from the drop-down list which appears. The "Xfinity Support" graphic replaces the "To:" line
  • Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window
  • Press Enter to send it
