Which modem should I purchase?

I keep getting messages from Xfinity that my current modem needs to be replaced/upgraded to take full advantage of the Gigabit plan I'm on. I generally agree. My modem is Motorola, it is very reliable but old and needs an upgrade. Currently my download / upload speeds are ~900 / 24 MBs, and this is much as it can handle. I have researched the list of Comcast "recommended" modems and what's available and am deciding between Arris S33 and S34. I would prefer S34 (it should have better upload speeds), but it looks like many users have complained that provisioning may be problematic. I can go with S33, but don't know this would improve the upload speed. Can the community share their experience on either model? Thanks!

Just an update - I searched for available modems, and can see that either Arris S34 or Netgear CM3000 would support higher download and especially upload speeds; however, both modems are recommended for use with mid/high-split technology. I don't know if my area has been upgraded, and if my plan supports mid/high-split. How do I find out before I purchase one of these modems? Also, I have read that these modems sometimes are challenging to get provisioned by Comcast - how do I make sure that this would not be a problem once I purchase the new modem? Xfinity Support - would you please help to clarify this?

GVZ Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us here on our Xfinity Forums. There shouldn't be any issues with getting the modems provisioned to work with our services as long as they are on our compatible devices list.

XfinityBillie - thank you very much for responding. I still have questions.

It has outputs for phone lines which I don't need, and is based on Netgear 2000 which is an outdated model.

Meanwhile, Netgear CM3000 is listed as "Next Gen Speed Tier". It has everything I need, but is described as "it that can only be accessed with mid/high-split technology, such as Xfinity’s 2Gbps download speeds and 200Mbps upload speeds." So, I still have two questions:

- how do I find out that this mid/high split technology is available at my home address?

- if it is, how do I find out that my current plan is compatible with this modem or should I upgrade the plan?

Thanks again for your help!

No modem, including any of those offered by Xfinity can achieve the 200Mbps upload speed unless the mid/high split technology has been deployed.  Best to check on that first before making a modem choice.  A rough cut method would be to look at your serving address and see if the speed is offered.  Unless you have client devices that can use the higher upload/download speeds, it would not be worth making the change at least in my mind, however I always try to minimize any interaction with Xfinity customer service.

Thanks justsam . It looks like the mid/high split technology has been deployed in my area, so I will try to go with one of the newer modems - either Netgear CM3000 or Arris S33. Will probably need to replace the router as well. I am not unhappy with my download speed as it is now, but the upload speed needs improvement. Thanks!
