Weak wifi signal from wifi extendee

I actually have my own WiFi Extender set up the same way, in the room directly above my gateway. Under normal circumstances, that should be close enough to get a clear signal, as long as your flooring doesn't contain anything that could interfere with the signal (wiring, pipes, insulation, etc.). I was initially wanting to put my extender in the upstairs bathroom, since it was central to the rest of the floor, but the pipes caused too much interference, so I had to put it in a bedroom. Have you tried testing the connection from a room on the same floor, just to see if it gave you the same issues?
