USB ports on xFi gateway

Will xFinity ever open up the almost useless USB ports on the Cisco DPC3941T gateway so that they can be used to connect a networked USB hard drive? Or are we stuck? And have no recourse but to get rid of this gateway?

If they haven’t by now now, doubt it. The newest models don’t even have one present

Does that hard drive not have an ethernet port / interface ?

Yes, it does, but I thought that an Ethernet connection would only work if the drive is NAS, whereas a regular drive would work with the USB connection. Am I wrong?
