Uploading files from computer slows internet access for entire home network
I'm a video editor and we have Xfinity's "Superfast" internet access with unlimited monthly upload capacity.
Problem: lately, whenever I attempt to upload a large (multi-GB) file from my Windows 11 PC, internet access for our entire home slows to a crawl, including WiFi and streaming via Apple TV (which is hard-wired to our Xfinity modem).
Service is immediately restored as soon as I stop or pause the upload.
Why?
I know upload speeds are throttled, which is fine, but why does uploading so dramatically affect download speeds for the rest of the network?

Most internet communications use the TCP protocol which requires an acknowledgment for every bit of data sent. Acks are small, but when you are uploading Acks have to compete with your upload for a very small amount of upstream bandwidth compared to your downstream bandwidth. It's possible to "fix" this problem by limiting upload bandwidth to leave room for the Acks, but it requires a router that can limit upstream bandwidth. For that you'll need a modem or a gateway/WiFi router in bridge mode and a router that can limit bandwidth. Business class routers will generally be able to do it, but some higher end consumer routers can too. Alternatively, it may be possible to use a software solution on the machine you are uploading from.
