Upload speed dropped from ~350 Mbps to ~100 Mbps after plan "upgrade"

I recently "upgraded" my Xfinity plan, but my upload speed dropped from approximately 350 Mbps to 100 Mbps afterward.

I am using the exact same modem, router, coax wiring, Ethernet setup, and client equipment as before. Nothing changed on my side.

I am using my own DOCSIS 3.1 modem, and I understand that it cannot support the full symmetric 1 Gbps upload speed of the new plan. I am not expecting 1 Gbps upstream from this modem.

What I am trying to understand is why the same DOCSIS 3.1 modem was previously delivering around 350 Mbps upstream, but after the plan change is now limited to roughly 100 Mbps upstream.

My modem is still locking normally and shows:

  • 4 SC-QAM upstream channels
  • 1 OFDMA upstream channel
  • OFDMA channel ID 43, 44.4 MHz wide
  • Upstream power around 43.5–46.8 dBmV

This looks like a provisioning/profile issue rather than a signal or equipment problem. Could an Xfinity employee please restore the same provisioning/profile that was previously applied to this modem and was delivering approximately 350 Mbps upstream? The modem, wiring, and local network setup have not changed, so I would like the previous DOCSIS 3.1 upstream profile restored if possible.

I can provide my account information, modem MAC address, before/after speed tests, and full channel statistics privately by DM.

I am having the same issue as well except that I did not change anything. No hardware or plan changes on my setup. I even tested hardwired and wifi connections with mu Upload capped around 100mbps. My download speeds are perfectly fine. I might add I am running an XB8 in bridge mode connected to a Eero Pro 7 and 2 other Pro 7s wireless backhauled. Everything is working as intended for download speeds and connection, except the upload speeds are all around 100mbps.

That sounds very similar to what I’m seeing, although our setups are different.

In my case, I recently switched to the X-Class 1 Gbps / 1 Gbps symmetrical plan. I’m using a customer-owned ARRIS S34 DOCSIS 3.1 modem, so I understand I won’t get the full 1 Gbps symmetrical upload that requires the Xfinity FDX gateway. However, immediately after the plan change my upload dropped to about 100 Mbps.

What makes it especially strange is that I inherited the modem/equipment and coax line from the previous owner, and they were getting approximately 1 Gbps down / 350 Mbps up on the same setup. My S34 is also still locking a DOCSIS 3.1 OFDMA upstream channel, so the enhanced upstream path appears to be available.

Your case is interesting because you have an XB8, made no hardware or plan changes, and are also suddenly capped around 100 Mbps while download remains normal. That makes me wonder whether both of us are seeing some kind of upstream provisioning/profile issue on Xfinity’s side rather than a local hardware problem.

Hopefully Xfinity Support can push the correct provisioning on both accounts and check whether the upstream service profile or enhanced-upload configuration changed.

Yeah sounds very strange. I have Gigabit 2x Plan with 2gpbs/300mbps up and how my set up is XB8 (Bridge Mode) > Eero Pro 7 > Switch > Multiple Other Devices and then 2 other Eero Pro 7s that are Wireless Backhaul.

I was having perfectly fine download/upload speeds at least 2 weeks ago and all of a sudden I checked my speed tests in the Eero App and it was giving me 2gbps down, but 100mbps uploads. I rebooted both XB8 and Eero network and still get the same results.

I tested multiple devices near different nodes and the download speeds are coming as expected, except the uploads are caping at around 100mbps. I know for a fact at least 2 weeks ago I was getting my advertised 300.

It sounds like your upstream may have fallen back to the legacy SC-QAM channels instead of using the DOCSIS 3.1 OFDMA upstream channel.

I’d check the XB8 connection stats and confirm whether the OFDMA upstream channel is still showing as Locked. If OFDMA is no longer locking, that could explain the drop from around 300 Mbps upload to roughly 100 Mbps and would point more toward a signal or upstream-channel issue.

If the OFDMA channel is still locked but your upload is consistently capped around 100 Mbps, then I’d strongly suspect an upstream provisioning or service-profile issue on Xfinity’s side.

In my case, the OFDMA upstream channel is locked, but upload is still pegged at about 100 Mbps. That’s why I’m trying to get Xfinity to check the modem provisioning/profile rather than the physical line.

Upstream Bonded Channels
Channel ID Lock Status US Channel Type Frequency Width Power
17 Locked SC-QAM 16400000 Hz 6400000 44.8 dBmV
20 Locked SC-QAM 35600000 Hz 6400000 46.5 dBmV
19 Locked SC-QAM 29200000 Hz 6400000 45.8 dBmV
18 Locked SC-QAM 22800000 Hz 6400000 45.3 dBmV
43 Locked OFDMA 36200000 Hz 44400000 43.5 dBmV
