Unable to change wifi name

When I go into edit mode for wifi, everything is grayed out. Why is this? This is one of the most basic features of a router. Even when I use the app to do it, it allows me to change it...but it NEVER actually changes it on the network. The network still transmits the old name. This is a HUGE deal breaker for me and if there is no option for this...I'll be returning it and going back to my Orbi. Not sure why xfinity always goes against industry standards. One of the worst companies of all time.

Grayed out -- you mean from the local management interface at http://10.0.0.1  ?

They did cripple the firmware for that on the rental modems.  You can try setting it in the phone app.  Then, will it change right away on your gateway?  Well, you are updating a remote database that holds the configuration for your gateway.  How and when that is supposed to propagate to your gateway is anyone's guess.  They don't document that part.

What I'd try if I were using one of those if it didn't work, is change it in the phone app, then yank the power cord on the gateway.  Wait 20 seconds to wipe out any volatile memory, then plug it back in.  See if it will download it's configuration from Xfinity when it comes back up.  Maybe it will, maybe it won't.  Doesn't look like there was any product management, QA engineering, or plan for the phone app/database infrastructure.   

Let folks know if that works or not.

The instructions at this link allowed me to change ssid names as well as passwords — even though it does not explicitly show how to edit ssid: https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/view-change-wifi-password.

Suggestion to Xfinity team: Please edit document to explicitly show how to edit ssid as this seems to be a common support request.
