Trouble getting connected to the internet

I can’t get my box to hook to the internet how can I check to make sure I have a good signal at my cable connection outside the house

Was there ever Comcast service at these premises, or is this a new install ? Is the "Online" indicator light on the modem lit steadily ? Was the device activated for service ?
