Tesla inverter wireless connection

I have a newly installed Tesla solar panel inverter. Tesla says it cannot connect to a wireless network with WPA3 security. My home network on Xfi gateway, CGM4981COM, uses WPA3 security.

The inverter connection has to be WPA. How can I get it connected without reducing the security level of my entire home network?

Can it do WPA2??

That's AES and still considered secure.  If not, old skool WPA/TKIP is not secure and has been broken in 12-52 minutes.

@flatlander3 Their message says "...the only way they will reconnect is by setting it as an WPA." They offer no assistance. I wonder if it could connect to my home hotspot, but can't determine, so far, if that also has WPA3 or can be configured to WPA without changing home wi-fi level.

Then you don't want it on the same subnet as your other gear.  Likely, running old software with compromised libraries from other known exploits over a decade old.

Ideally, you'd buy something with maintained software.  I'm also not sure I'd want something like a power inverter exposed to the world in the first place.  What's the use case for it?  Are you trying to access it from a local-only location, or a remote location?

@flatlander3 Solar system is leased, originally from Solar City, then they merged with Tesla 2016. Original inverter failed August, 2022. Replacement took months, until Dec 1.

Original agreement says I must provide an internet connection with 10/100 Mbps Ethernet with TCP/IP and DHCP, which I have all along, with no problem until the original inverter failed (Original install included a cabled device on my network that communicated wirelessly with the original inverter). System production statistics are transmitted to Tesla via an internet connection, and are supposed to be available to customers through their app.

New inverter, Tesla says, cannot communicate with WPA3 system, it must be WPA (can't get answer, so far, whether WPA2 would work). That means Tesla is using 20th-century technology in the third decade of the 21st century. I may need a lawyer.

Not sure if this still works. YMMV. They constantly change things, remove features and functions, and cripple the firmware.... Good luck !

SECURITY MODE >>>>>>> To change the Comcast router security level to WPA2 /AES you can follow these steps:

1. Connect to your WiFi network and go to http://10.0.0.1, and sign in.
Note: If you haven't changed it, the default username is admin and the default password is password.
2. Once logged in, you can go to Gateway > Connection > Wi-Fi.
3. To change your Security Mode, select Edit next to Security Mode, then select your WPA2 mode.
4. Once your desired option is selected, hit Save Settings.

Please post back about how it goes.

Finally, talked to a Tesla customer service rep with experience and brains! There is a backup in the inverter using cellular, Tesla is getting the production info. She checked the mapping and fixed the issue with their app, so it now shows all production data since the new install. Their inverter still can't communicate with a system using WPA3, which is absurd, but now it's their problem. I definitely did not want to reduce security level of my network.

Thanks to Flatlander 3 and EG for your responses.

@FlashJ

You're welcome ! But were you able to change the security mode anymore ?

@EG Never got to it, since Tesla finally told me it's not necessary, contrary to what they were telling me for weeks. Thanks again!

@FlashJ   Wow.  Well OK.  Thank you for getting back to us.  Few do.

I'd still be super uncomfortable about an inverter talking to anyone.  If it's possible to jack with something like output A/C frequencies, you can actually brown out and over-current whatever is hooked up to it, overheat it, fry your stuff, and potentially burn your house down.

Everyone is one zero day away from a data breach and a hijacked network.  Something to watch for when you buy product.  If there's a phone app or connection to someone else that must be used, you don't want it.
