Storm Ready backup using ethernet

My home is hard wired Ethernet to 99% of my devices. Is it possible to run Ethernet from my x8 gateway to the backup device? I have a 48 port switch off the gateway now. If my gateway goes down will the backup supply data to my switch?

Hi @serviceman77 Thank you for visiting our Xfinity Community Forums. The Storm Ready device comes with two Ethernet ports so it is possible to connect via Ethernet. When your modem is down because of a power outage, Storm-Ready WiFi becomes the home WiFi modem using the LTE internet connection and Battery Backup. You can view more on the setup of the Storm Ready WiFi here.

To elaborate on this question….I

I have a wired network with multiple hardwired wireless access points in bridge mode transmitting the same SSID. My X7 is the gateway and router. It feeds the wired network. Can I hard wire an Ethernet port from the storm ready to the wired network so when the X7 goes down, the Storm ready will feed the wired network from its Ethernet port?

As a second question, will the storm ready act as a wired wireless access point when connected to the wired network that is fed by the X7 during normal operations or only as a Wi-Fi extender for the wireless network?

Thanks

Those are excellent questions, @user_6z5zv1! The Storm-Ready WiFi device has two Ethernet ports that can be used to either connect back to the gateway, or supply an Ethernet connection for your devices.

I'm not entirely sure if the Storm-Ready WiFi device can support multiple devices through a hub or switch in the event of a power failure, but the device does provide an LTE internet connection to the Xfinity Gateway in the event of a service interruption, allowing your XB7 to operate as usual, just at a reduced connection speed.

@XfinityJamesC So are you saying that I do not need to hardwire the Storm Ready device to a switch in case of a service outage? That the Storm Ready device connects wirelessly to the Gateway to provide my currently hardwired devices LTE service in the event of a service outage?

@RikkiGemini   Correct! You only need to make sure it is near a window, and up off the ground. It's that easy :). Check out all the details on the FAQ here https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/storm-ready-faqs. The activation guide here https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/install-storm-ready will show what exactly to connect and how.

Based on your response, can you please elaborate what the two ethernet ports on the back of the storm ready device are for then. - I thought those were to plug into my switch that is plugged into my xfinity modem so that in the event the modem service is down, the storm ready device would provide internet to any device connected to my switch.  If the ethernet ports are not connected from the storm ready device to a switch, how do any devices on the network (wired, or wireless) know how to connect to the storm ready device - magically?  - Thanks.

Is there an Admin access available into the Storm-Ready device to see the configuration pages ?
