Stop paying for modem rental - been renting for 2 years

Hi,

When I started purchasing WiFi from Xfinity I was told that I could buy out the modem after I had rented it for a long time. I have been renting it for 2 years, and I want to buy it out. I preferably no longer want to be charged any additional fees because at this point I have paid more than the modem is worth in rental fees. The rental fee has even increased over the past 2 years and I no longer want to pay it.

They do not sell their equipment. You have to purchase compatible equipment at retail.

2 years of rental does add up to a lot of money. There are a lot of sites that will help you look at equipment you will need to switch out your modem. Youtube is a good start. Search modem switch with Comcast. Google is also a good source of info for doing the switch. I just bought a modem and router from Amazon that is made for xfinity. For about $120 you can own your gear and stop paying rental fees. Don't forget to return your modem or you will be charged rental. Good luck!

Make sure that whatever you purchase is on their approved devices list here;

Enter your speed tier info.

I currently have Arris SB8200 which is on the approved list.  Are there brand/model of modems that Xfinity actually rents to customers?  I am looking for without wifi.

The reason I ask is it appears that SB8200 is "sensitive" and I was experiencing frequent outage recently.  The tech was able to increase upstream power to 40 which seems to have helped but wanted to be prepared for a replacement.

They only rent out combo gateway devices these days.

@EG  Got it - thanks.   I guess I will try Motorola 8600 or 8611 if my Arris continues to act up.   I think they are basically made by the same company but who knows may be I have a defective unit.   Oddly enough, Arris refused to do any warranty related exchanges unless they see Upstream at higher levels...

Hi there @mestes8! Thank you so much for reaching out here to us via our Forums platform. I understand not wanting to pay modem fees after renting for so many years. Unfortunately, we do not sell our modems, I apologize for any miscommunication.

You can visit https://comca.st/3kWG5CT and review compatible modems we recommend for you to purchase. Please let us know if you have any other questions at all. Thank you.
