sporadic long connection delays

For the past couple of weeks I have been experiencing sporadic (although not quite random) connection delays to remote sites usually around 11 seconds versus the usual 200 milliseconds.

Trying to track this down I wrote a simple script to do a GET from google.com once a second and record the response time.

Note that this was from my MacBook connected via gigabit ethernet with wifi turned off just to be sure that I'm going through the wired connection and that my throughput, when tested, is excellent coming through as 800-900 bps. But I have also seen evidence of these delays from other devices connected both via ethernet and wifi.

The attached chart shows a simple scatterplot of the results taken over 5 hours (timestamp timezone PDT) showing the request time in blue with a very strong line at around 11 seconds and the red dots show the delta between slow requests (> 1 second) with clusters around 60 and 120 seconds.

It's interesting that there are so few problems from 4AM to 4:30AM.

This has been going on for about two weeks and yes, I've reset the modem a few times. While the delays aren't cripping they're really annoying and are totally freaking out my Ooma internet phone
