Router/modem with 2.4 frequency

Does Xfinity rent a router/modem that 1) supports a 1GB speed, and 2) allows manual override to specific frequencies?

I recently upgraded to a 1 GB plan and received a new router modem. It is my understanding the model I have has multiple banded frequencies and is automatically determined and cannot be overridden. I have two devices that require a 2.4 connection and will not connect to this router. I realize I can purchase a third party router and modem with this capability but I have also seen comments and reviews that even so-called compatible devices have not insignificant connectivity issues with little tech support provided.

i am willing to stay with a rented router modem if it can meet the two conditions above.

thanks

Hi there, @user_eks5xb Thank you so much for taking the time to reach out to us. Yes, Xfinity does rent out modem/routers that support 1Gbps speeds, such as the Xfinity Advanced Gateway (XB8). However, the newer rented gateways do not allow manual override of specific frequencies, since the new modems use automatic band selection for optimal performance.-Richard

@XfinityRichard  Thank you for this response. The problem is that two of my devices require a 2.4 GHZ frequency. MyQ tech support (one device requiring 2.4 GHZ) says that many of these automatic multibanded router modems like the Xb8, will generally first try to connect at 5 GHZ, and if it can’t connect, it doesn’t try again at 2.4 GHZ. I have since purchased another product that says in multiple places I need to verify a 2.4 GHZ frequency.

Does Xfinity provide another router modem that will support a 1 GB speed, but allow for band selection?

When I had a 300 MB speed plan, the older router modem had no issue with MyQ.

i feel like I am not making forward progress.

Even with our XB8 modem, while the default setting is to have the Wi-Fi bands combined to connect devices to whichever band the modem determines is stronger, you always have the ability to split your bands between the 2.4ghz and 5ghz directly through our Xfinity app at any time. I understand certain devices need to prioritize the 2.4ghz band to work, so this setting allows you to account for that.

Your gateway does indeed broadcast a 2.4GHZ signal.  The older devices should connect with no issues.

@NoNoBadPuppy thank you for your comment. Yes, the gateway does support 2.4, 5, and 6 GHZ. The problem with the Xb8 router modem Gateway is that it automatically determines what is “best”. But I have two devices that require a 2.4GHZ frequency. I am told by the tech support at MyQ (one of the devices requiring 2.4) that the multibanded router modems will often start at 5 GHZ, and if it doesn’t connect, it doesn’t try other frequencies. So it can’t connect. I am told by Xfinity this Xb8 does not allow me to “force” a particular frequency. Hence my dilemma.
