Router External IP Address / Port Forwarding

Hello,

I have a brand new configured Netgear R7000 router and am trying to configure port forwarding for some very simple services.

I have configured the router to forward port 22 (for SSH) to my desktop but it is not accessible. I know that this port is available because SSH connection is possible if using the private IP address of the desktop, but not my external IP address.

My R7000 router is connected to a Netgear CM500, but I don't think that's causing any problems with port forwarding as it is only a modem and port forwarding is handled by the router. I had this EXACT same setup at my previous address (same hardware and ISP) and this setup worked just fine. But no such luck since the move.

My R7000 router is showing a 172.x.x.x address which I believe to be the problem. I want it to have the external facing IP address, but I don't think I can fix this. I called Comcast (I spoke to a helpdesk person) but they were unable to help me. All I want is for my router to have a public IP address.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have looked literally everywhere I can think of and am going a little crazy trying to figure this out.

Thanks in advanced!

You should indeed be getting a public IP address assigned by Comcast. First, try powering down both the modem and the router for one minute. Now power up the modem first and let it fully sync up with the system (Online Light lit steadily). Then power up the router and let it fully stabilize. Now start from scratch and try again.

Only the range 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255 is private.  If it is outside that range it is your public address.
