Router Band Steering (EV charger keeps dropping wifi even though I have Pod next to it)

Hi there,

I'm trying to troubleshoot why my Juicebox EV charger keeps dropping wifi.  When I first got it, it worked flawless for 2 months, then I started dropping connectivity daily.  I then bought a Xfinity wifi pod and plugged it 6 inches away from the EV charger, and that still hasn't fixed it.

This is from Juicebox support....

Your RSSI signal strength is excellent at -37 ,-41

I see a pattern of online/offline that looks like your router is band steering. This is a feature of many routers that encourages dual-band capable wireless clients to connect to the faster 5 GHz WiFi, and leave the 2.4 GHz WiFi less-crowded for those clients who support 2.4 GHz only; therefore to improve WiFi performance for all the clients.

It can be problematic if coverage on 5 GHz is significantly weaker and has coverage holes, as compared to coverage for 2.4 GHz and because the JuiceBox only operates on the 2.4 GHz network band.

If the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands share the same Network Name (SSID), it is recommended to disable Band Steering to reduce the confusion on the WiFi client or create a 2.4 GHz only guest network and connect the JuiceBox to that network.

I suggest you check the manual for that router and find the setting that allows you to turn off the band steering or set the JuiceBox with the highest priority.

Any tips on how to do this? This is a little over my head.

Thank you

The two WiFi bands SSID's have recently been combined into one with the Comcast gateway devices. Some devices get confused and don't know how to see / talk to combined SSID's.

If you are not using any Xfi Pods, you can try separating the 2.4 and the 5.0 names and give them two different broadcast names / SSID's;

Associate the devices with the new / respective 2.4 or 5.0 SSID (broadcast name) and password (whichever their needs may be).

@EG Thank you for replying!

Quick question... you said if I wan't using any Xfi Pods.. I am only using one for the garage in hopes this solved the problem, which it didn't.... so just stop using the Pod and then try your method?

The pod can't function unless the bands are combined.

Thank you.. I ran into this issue, as I have a newer gateway.. I went through your steps on the webpage and can't access the wifi settings. from the help page..

"If you don't see the 2.4 and 5 GHz WiFi settings (WiFi Mode, Channel Selection, and Channel Mode) in Advanced Settings, this means these settings are now being managed automatically to help optimize your home network and provide the best performance possible.

Looks like I have this

  • Customers with xFi Advanced Gateways (XB6 or newer): Most of these Gateways have been upgraded with software that manages advanced WiFi settings automatically to help optimize your home network and provide the best performance possible. Advanced WiFi settings for Gateways with this software enhancement are not visible and cannot be managed from the Admin Tool or Xfinity xFi.

Any other tips?

Ditch the gateway. Save the rental fee. Get real equipment and be happy !
