Replacing my Xfinity Gateway with a store bought Gateway
Hello,
I purchased a new gateway that is being shipped to me, but I needed some clarification on getting it set up. I found the installation instructions online, which called for me to attach the coaxial, plugin power, and open the manufacturer App (SurfBoard) after bootup to configure the modem. When I read the Xfinity instructions it tells me to attach the coaxial cable, plug it into power, and after bootup open the Xfinity App. I'm confused and hoping someone can clarify this. Do I configure the modem with the Surfboard App or instead just use the Xfinity App??? Thank You in advance for any help offered.

You need to use the Xfinity app in order for the device to be able to be activated for service on the system. You will need to use the Surfboard app to perform other router configurations such as WiFi and firewall settings afterwards.

Right. Their Xfinity app can not control a third-party retail router's settings. It can only control the settings of their rented gateway devices.

Quite welcome ! And no sir. That feature only works if one of their rental gateways is swapped for another rental.

You can also use the Xfinity gateway running in bridge mode and then use your own router for Wi-Fi. We've done that for years and just swapped out our older router for a new mesh system. Considered getting our own modem, too, but our current XFi Complete package is actually cheaper as it includes unlimited data and no rental charge for the device.
