Problem with my location on Edge

Edge has me located in Baltimore-I am in Central Virginia. I have searched high and low, even paid my computer builder for help, but no luck. The only clue I have is that my location is set by my ISP-Comcast. How do I get help from Comcast to get my location corrected? Thanks.

Not quite. Comcast/Xfinity assigns your public IP address, but does not control where others think that IP is located. Converting an IP address to a location is called "IP Geolocation" and it's done by third parties. https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/your-home-network/fix-geolocation-of-my-ipaddress/666127b51e56d61567f91b4d?commentId=66618f1609e34b487ca2560a and https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/correct-geolocation-data may help you correct the location info.

Changing your public IP may or may not change where these third parties think you are located. If you're using your own modem and router, you can use the router's "clone MAC" feature to change your IP.

If you're using a rental Comcast device, they do not provide a way to change the IP address, and they won't change it for you, so you'd have to:

  • swap out the gateway for another, or
  • place the gateway in bridge mode and connect a Wifi router, or
  • replace your gateway with customer-owned equipment

A VPN is another possibility. If you use one your public IP won't actually change, but systems you connect to will see the IP provided by the VPN rather than your actual public IP.

Thank you for reaching out to us here @vayankee1. The information provided by @BruceW is correct. We assign the IP address on your device, but we cannot control where the third parties see your location.

@XfinityJohnG Thanks for your post. Perhaps solving this problem might be helped by describing how this happened several months ago. At that time, I was using Google maps while searching for a particular location in Baltimore. I spent quite some time, after locating the site, searching for transportation methods and driving routes to the site I had targeted. In fact, that area is still the location where Google maps opens when I click on Chrome Maps.

I have tried to get Google maps to change my location to my home in Ventral Virginia, but I had no luck there. Is that what you mean by "third party seeing my location?"

Thanks.

Yes, that would be a third party that is seeing the location. The link provided by @BruceW does have some information on the geo location questions. Are you using an Xfinity modem or your own device?

Hello, I am using my own Arris modem. I have some good news. I went deeper into Google maps and found their Map activity history. There was geolocation data showing Baltimore longitude and latitude. I hit the delete button and now Google maps does not open in Baltimore but central Virginia. There was no guidance from Google on doing that detective work. Fingers crossed.

Awesome, I am glad to hear you were at least able to find that on the Google maps site. I will keep fingers crossed from here for you too.

I see that I did not send my message a minute ago, it seems. So, it appears the problem is solved. I went deeper into Google maps and found Map activity. In that list I found the coordinates got Baltimore. I deleted that activity. Then I reopened Google Maps, and it showed my location correctly. There was no guidance from Google anywhere that I could find that mentioned this method of correcting geolocation in Google Maps.

So, thanks for suggesting that I dig into third parties. BTW, I use an Arris modem of my own.
