Port forwarding fails with customer owned Motorola MB8611

I was told to replace my modem. I did so with a Motorola MB8611 now port forwarding rules I had set aren't working. All the instructions I can find on the Xfinity website assume I have an Xfinity proprietary gateway. I do not. I have a Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro security appliance/router, switches and eight access points in a large stone house and remote barn. The router is properly set up, when used with an alternative isp my port forwarding rules work perfectly, but they fail with Comcast Xfinity.

How do I fix this?

Thank you for reaching out over Xfinity Forums @k3fzt. I understand you would like to set up port forwarding using your own router. I am sorry you have run into trouble so far. You have reached the right team to help. Please follow these steps first-

1- Open a web browser

2- Then type your router’s IP address into the address bar

3- Next, enter your router’s username and password

4- Then go to the port forwarding settings on your router

5- Next, create a new port forwarding rule

6- Type in the port number you want to use

7- Then select a port forwarding protocol

8- Next, type in your computer’s IP address

9- Finally, save your settings

Please let me know if you run into any trouble with one of these steps (so we can troubleshoot at that point). Our team is here 24/7 to help and will be on standby!

@XfinityAnna Let's be clear. I know how to set up a port forwarding rule on my router. I have several such rules set up and working with a different ISP.

The rules I have used previously for Xfinity with a different modem no longer work with the new Motorola modem I purchased at Xfinity's urging and installed using the Xfinity app. So far as I can tell the Motorola modem is otherwise functioning just fine.

So tell me, please, how do I get Xfinity (not me and my router) to open these ports (which were previously open) to forwarding?

Thank you for the additional information @k3fzt. What port or ports are you looking to have opened? I would be happy to take a look and see if it is an option? This is a list of blocked ports and the reason why https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/list-of-blocked-ports.

I no longer work for Comcast.

@XfinityAnna None of Xfinity's blocked ports are the issue. I totally understand and even support what you are doing with those ports.

I'm interested in port numbers that are greater than 40000 (forty thousand). I'd rather not list specific ports on an open message system but I will readily supply the information if I may message you directly.

Thank you./Steve

@ k3fzt

Could you please send our team a direct message with your full name and full address? Our team can most definitely take a further look at this issue.

To send a "Peer to peer" ("Private") message:

Click "Sign In" if necessary

• Click the "Peer to peer chat" icon

• Click the "New message" (pencil and paper) icon

• Type "Xfinity Support" in the "To:" line and select "Xfinity Support" from the drop-down list which appears. The "Xfinity Support" graphic replaces the "To:" line

• Type your message in the text area near the bottom of the window

• Press Enter to send it

Quick Idea, might be it, might not be.

I don't know how the stack and firewall load rules work on your dream machine.  Perhaps they are binding the wrong WAN IP -- or a default IP -- on a startup if the dream machine comes up before the modem is fully connected.  I had to power sequence the startup on my firewall and netgear in bridge mode from a power off dead state.  My issue was DHCP on the WAN and the way the netgear modem comes up pass thru LAN side first.  You may have a different load rule issue going on with your equipment with a similar issue.

Shut down Dream machine.  Unplug/replug MB8611 and watch the lights.  When it's up and fully connected, power up Dream machine.  See if your port forwards work to the external IP address, after verifying the external IP address to make sure it didn't change (whatismyipaddress.com from an internal client).  If it works then, you might have to install enough backup power to ride out glitches plus handle the power sequence startup yourself.

@flatlander3 Thank you. This is a non-issue for the UDMP. I set the binding to the WAN hardware port, not to the specific ip. That's handled separately by the UDMP. I actually have two backhauls operating at this residence for failover and load-balancing. I have port forwarding active on both WAN ports for distinct purposes. The other WAN port forwarding is working perfectly for the 10 or so ports forwarded which are all higher than 2000. I'm just stuck with the 6 or so that I want to run over Xfinity.

Thanks for your interest in my problem and for taking the time to think about it and post a recommendation toward a solution.

Stay well; 'cause life is beautiful./Steve

Hello! Did you happen to get this resolved with Comcast? I just changed ISPs to them and bought the MB8611 but am unable to use my existing port forwards in pfsense. Any insights are appreciated!
