Packet Loss between Xfinity and Twitch (while live streaming)
I live stream video games on Twitch as a hobby. I was doing so for about a month, and out of nowhere I started having issues with lost frames - lost packets. No issues at all streaming on December 4th 2024. Severe packet loss started December 5th 2024.
I do not have ANY other issues currently with my service, and I do not have any issues streaming on Discord...
An Xfinity Technician just came out to my place today (he was super kind and knowledgeable- great rep!) and confirmed I have no issues with anything regarding my connection. Additionally, I have have no issues with my hardware or software. My CPU and GPU run consistently within bounds while gaming and streaming. My PC runs perfectly fine.
Standard Troubleshooting I have done:
- Restarted my PC
- Restarted the Xfinity modem
- Confirmed issue exists on/off VPN (though I seem to have slightly less packet loss while VPN is active - weird...)
- Confirmed issue exists on/off anti-virus software
- Confirmed issue exists on/off modem firewall
- Swapped Ethernet cables
- Swapped Ethernet ports on modem
- Some other troubleshooting steps I forgot because they're pretty basic
Advanced Troubleshooting I have done:
- DNS Refresh
- Tracert to Google's DNS Servers - to test latency between pings - confirmed no issues with my Ethernet, no faulty cables, no failing network card, etc.
- Testing stream quality settings - none of which have lead me to significantly less packet loss. At the lowest streaming settings (30 fps and 720p), I am still loosing 20-30%. At my desired settings (60 fps and 1080p), I am loosing 40-60%.
- Bandwidth Test to Twitch's Servers - which confirmed a poor connection between ISP (Xfinity) and Twitch's Live Servers. (Pictured below)
In order to have a stable stream, it is recommended to have a "Quality" of 80 or above. I can provide context on the other labels if needed. Even my friend out of Scotland tested better than my connection did TO US SERVERS - not having any issues with Twitch.
Additionally, OBS (the program I utilize to live stream) provides logs for all my streams, so that way people that utilize the app can troubleshoot general issues themselves, or in this instance, provide those logs when help is needed. This following line is consistent throughout my recent logs:
"Output 'rtmp multitrack video': Number of dropped frames due to insufficient bandwidth/connection stalls: 1349 (59.6%)"
The number of the stalls and % changes, but the 'Number of dropped frames due to insufficient bandwidth/connection stalls' phrase stays the same.
How can this be fixed?
yuly
